I really don't know what are these defects on my films.
the common denominators are:

all of them are from the same Delta 100 bulk roll.
the two first ones are rolled into a normal cassette.
The two others are from IXMOO's in barnacks with a few years difference between them.
All of them are from the first two or three pictures on the roll.

Please, help!!:confused:

Michael,

Looks like Half moons/kinks (bent film emulsion) from careless bulk loading or film processing.

Just had a look at the film. No damage.
Looks like something in the image itself.
also, a light leak would have seem bright, not black, right?
 
The mot likely problem is the film leader that touches the negative at the beginning of development, then as it softens with the developer soaking it up, it probably backs away and lets you develop the frame somewhat. You have to doublecheck how you load your reels.
 
I Feel Stupid !:eek: I had never thought of that possibility, but then 99.999% of the people cut the film leader when loading their film reels:D. That film area should look milk white:eek:.

Don't beat yourself up....
I load the 1st few inches in daylight, than use my changing bag for the rest, I don't remove the film either, just unload a few inches at a time... I use plastic self loading reels. And, yes, I cut the leader off and and make sure I cut through sprocket holes.

You may be in the right direction...
I do cut the leader, and the beginning of the film is going first in the reel.
Now, I only had this problem with delta. Never with hundreds of tri-x rolls.
Also, I am not very careful about how I cut the angles in the beginning of the film, and most of the time, there is quite a triangle of film moving forward in the reel. So I am wondering: Maybe Delta is more flexible than tri-x when wet, and the portion of film that is free at the beginning touches the emulsion of the film after one turn? Something like this could really create the straight, undeveloped line I see, and the movement during development would yield that kind of secondary line ??

one of the samples of the second type of artifacts is from an Arista P film...
so it's not film dependent..
Nonetheless, the former explanation seems plausible.
BTW, three of the four films have been developed with Rodinal and stand development, which may increase the issue by the lack of agitation.
Maybe I have been saved all these years by the agitation, but my way of cutting the films makes the tips touch the emulsion??
