Gotta catch the light.
I have the original Canon QL19 picked up on *bay on impulse a while ago and haven't gotten around to getting the mercury battery replacement. I haven't seen anyone really talk about this camera so here's my take (without a single picture!)
The camera's interesting to look at from an evolution design point of view It's about the same size as Yashica Electro 35 GSN/GT. The focusing ring has the nice metal tab with a smooth feel to it. The top is uncluttered, with the shutter release located on top of the film advance lever. On the Electro 35, they're located in two different places. Ergonomically, the only real gripe aside from the size being largish is the aperature setting ring which is too narrow to manipulate easily. Thew viewfinder is pretty bright and the overall lines are pretty clean. has a 45mm lens just slightly slower than the Electro 35.

I was looking at using it finally and noticed that the moving aperture ring doesn't change the opening area when the shutter is released. The shutter speeds seem to work okay. Does this need a battery for the aperature to work even on manual settings? Obviously the AUTO wouldn't work. Just curious if anyone knows. Also what are the 'X' and 'M' settings?

I think the X is for flash synch and the m is for flash bulb synch.

The camera will work on manual settings without battery. Just don't set the aperture at "A".
To check if aperture works, open the camera back, cock the shutter. Then turn the aperture dial to see from inside if the aperture changes.
At "A" mode, it needs battery to meter and set the aperture.
