You know, a lot of great stuff is said about the QL17, but I notice that on ebay, you can get a QL19 GIII a whole lot cheaper. I'm thinking about getting a camera for literally keeping in the glovebox of my car, and thinking one of these might do the trick. My car is a convertible, so it's really never locked up properly (it only takes a couple of press studs to open her up). The other possibility is a Konica C35 that I can grab for $15 - but I don't think there's any control of aperture or shutter speed with them...

So how much worse than a 17 is the 19?

Steve, I think the 'major' problem of 19's may be that they are often neglected by its bigger brother. I managed to get a g3ql19 in perfect shape with also perfect canonlite flash for only a bit more than what I paid for a 17 that needed a full repair.

I've already done the VF cleaning (check Brian's tips on the gallery) and also removed the old sticky goo in which light seals had turned (check for Jon Goodman's seal kits on eB@y under the name interslice).

Still must put the new seals in place and go shoot with that one, yes, I'm going slow, I know :rolleyes:
 
There are big and small QL-19's just like there are big and small QL-17's. Each of the Canon body styles came with both lenses.

Matt Denton's picture above is of one of the bog boys.

I have the QL19 in both sizes. The big ione s BIG!. It is about the size of an Konica Auto S2 or a Minolta 7. The lenses on the big bodies are also longer than the smaller GIII style.

If you opt for the QL19 in the GIII style body, it will look almost exactly like the QL17 GIII. Mechanically it is the same. Only the lens is deifferent. Take a look at the Canon Camera Museum for detailed information.

The f1.9 lens is 45mm instead of 40mm and it has an optical design with one fewer element, so people say it's not as sharp, but I can't say one way or the other.
