Photos of Oscar winners cropped right on the knees, from an awkward angle and yet still deemed fit for web publication in an organization which supposedly takes still photography seriously. Why should the viewer look at the blank space on the sides of the Oscar winners and not see their feet? This is not so much a question of rules but basic understanding of visual presentation. Why not a simple vertical head-to-toe picture or that would be too boring? http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2013/02/24/movies/awardsseason/20130224_OSCAR_WINNERS-2.html

The Guardian has few cumbersome pictures too, could it be that they gave an unusually uncomfortable position to some photographers? In any case I think that also a head-to-toe picture would have been boring, without control on light and with little possibility for moving around is not easy to produce anything else. Still I would have cropped the picture to get a closer view, but that's me and I was not sent to take pictures at the Oscar so probably they know it better... 😀
