Question about Nikkor-S 50/1.4

Serial number 401xxx from about 1958, does anyone know what screw in filter or screw in hood size is? My old Walz UV filter appears to be a 39, is that possible? Thanks for any input.

43mm is what I always thought it was but then this Walz UV filter has the number 39 so I was perplexed. Thanks for your quick response.

does it say SL39, i think it was there code. i have one that has walz UV for nikkor 5cm 1.4 & i have kenko filters with a SL 38

Yes it does have SL 39.

As a matter of fact upon closer inspection it says SL 39 3.
It probably is their designation for the 43mm size. Thanks much.

The SL38, SL39 etc. numbers refer to the UV filtering rating of the filter. The number is directly related to the wavelength of the light from where the filter will let light through (sorry, I can't find anything on the net about this). Nikon designates their UV filters L37C (C for coated).

The wavelength of light is expressed in units of nm. UV light is on the shorter end of the wavelength spectrum - 350nm to 400nm etc. The manufacturers knock off the last zero to get the numbers above.
