Question about processing film shot in Nikon S

Hi All,

I have just shot a roll of film in my "new" Nikon S, to test the shutter speeds. I now have a question. Do I need to tell the lab about the 24x34mm frame size?

The thing is, I don't know if the camera still spaces the frames out to fit into a 24x36mm frame, or not. My guess would be that it doesn't, and I thought this might cause a printing problem if the machine the lab uses was to assume a 36mm frame width. (I don't know much about printing labs, either)

Elsewhere, someone has suggested that I ask for them not to cut the negatives, which sounds like good advice. But I haven't had any authoratative replies yet.

I'd recommend you do tell them and don't let them cut your negs as they are cut by machine which is set to "standard" spacing" :bang:

Hey guess what - I'm starting a bit of a collection and just got my first Canonet today. It's a 19, badged "Bell & Howell / Canon". I'm focusing my collection on unusual rangefinders, and the advance crank on the bottom is what attracted me to this machine. It's in Excellent++ condition, almost like new! I'm chuffed.

Murray a very nice capture !! I've not got one (Yet) but I love those bottom crankers they are real classics. As you are finding out RFs are very very addictive 😀

I agree with Tony's advice, to let the lab handle this on a careful and custom basis. You might consider "souping" your own film, too...

I've thought the 24x34mm frame is pretty cool, and if anything it might even be cooler at 24x32 or 24x30mm. I've given some thought to making little mask pieces to attach to each side of the film gate to accomplish this. And likewise masking the viewfinder. It would result in wider spaces between frames, but that's ok too, making the negs easier to cut, etc.

I'll second that for sure, I assume shorter frames were used to get more pictures from the film. These days I pay 5 DM for a b/w film and 6 DM for colour slide, in 1950 it was 5 DM for b/w and 20 DM for slide, but these DM were worth much more bread and butter....

I would recommend a lab which processes on side, because if the person on the counter writes "Develop only - DO NOT CUT" the one on the machine should do it this way.

Unless your camera cares a sticker "Converted for colour film" you are only allowed to use with b/w film, which you have to develop yourself! 😀

The Nikon S uses the standard number of sprockets advancing negative-to-negative. The mask size is smaller, so more "dead-Space" in between negatives. Standard machines should be able to process it, which is the readon why Nikon quit using the 24x32 format of the Nikon I.
