The inbuilt rangefinder 28/35/50 is for lenses with 28mm, 35mm and 50mm. There is no crop. Right ?!.

For my CV21/4 I do need an external viewfinder. Guessing and controlling on the display isn´t the right way.

Is this right, that I need an viewfinder with 30mm?
What is the best viewfinder therefore?

Thank´s
Rainer

If you use a 21mm on the R-D1S and you want to use an external viewfinder, you will want to use a ~33mm finder. A 35mm external finder is probably your best option. I would recommend getting a brightline finder.

Or if you can wait, the soon-to-be-available CV 15-35mm "zoom finder" sounds like a very useful tool.

i'm new to the rd1 but have been using a 15 and a 21 w/o external finders and it's been working ok, so far.

you get instant feedback and can check the images immediately. after a while you get used to the fov of the lens in use.

I have a Russar (20) finder for the Heliar 12. Image is slightly bigger.
For the Heliar 15 I think I will also use the Russar finder. Image is slightly smaller.
I changed the foot on the Russar finder. So now the finder is mounted as tight as it can be above the body. The Russar's swivel system, however nifty, had too much play.
For the 21mm lens I have a 28mm Leitz finder which I taped up a bit to narrow the fov. Works well.
The 25mm is about full frame on the R-D1.

Thank you all for quick answers,

@ Keith
I think an 35mm vf is to small for 21mm.
What do you mean with "brightline" finder?
And yes, I heard also about the CV 15-35mm "zoom finder", but it seems to be very big. Best would be to get it in the hands and check.

@ joe
I know what you mean, but this is exactly the way I´m not satisfied with how I wrote. And also I like to keep the display closed while working. For a real check what you are doing it is much to small.

@ Rob
Do I understand you right, you mean the fov for a 21mm lens a 28mm Leitz vf is a bit to narrov and the 25mm fits perfect. Is this a crop of 1,5?!?

What I mean is this, see att. No chance for proof on the tiny display a bright sunlight.

No, I taped the 28 finder to get a proper idea to what a 21mm gives. A little narrower than the 28mm fov.
full finder is like the 25mm.

I use the vc 28/35 minifinder with my 21. It's all a guesstimate anyways.

I was using the finder from the 21 for my 15, but now-a-days I don't bother with a viewfinder at all for either the 15 or 12.
