Question on 617 with Super Angulon 90mm lens

Hi all, not sure if i posted in correct place.

recently i just acquire a custom made 617 body paired with Super Angulon 90mm f8, which is using 67mm size filter

my question is

1. do you think i need a C-PL filter in doing landscape with this lens? (i dun mind the trouble if its necessary)

2. if i do, is the 67mm C-PL slim type is recomm ? coz afraid of vignetting on corner, or step up to 77mm is recomm ?

choice of CPL, B+W KSM MRC 67mm slim and Heliopan C-PL 67mm SH-PMC slim

You don't need a circular polarizer. You need a regular conventional polarizer.

the 90/8 should not automatically need any polarizer. But if you use one, I would get a linear, not a c-pl.

the regular 67mm filter (not slim) is fine. I have never found/noticed any filter vignette in 4x5 with movements... this lens should have pretty good coverage for 6x17.

It should be fine on 6x17 without a filter, the lens covers 13x18 quite nicely.

You may want to get a larger filter anyway if ever you decide to do 5x7s.

A linear polarizer is the only thing made for controlling reflections and darkening blue sky. A filter won't make the lens cover more film area, will it? A center filter would smooth out light fall off if you are close to the limit of the lens' image circle.

The OP says he has a custom made 617 body, so maybe that makes the lens' image circle a bit tenuous? The Schneider 90/8 shouldn't need a center filter on a 617 body.

Correct. But on some wide angle lenses (not the 90/8 tho), a regular rather than slimline filter can cause some additional vignette at the edges of the coverage. I thought that's why the OP was asking about two slim models versus a regular C-PL.

Why he felt he needed a C-PL at all, I don't know. I would use a linear pola if using pola at all.

A center filter is not needed on the 90/8 - the light falloff to the corners is less than a half stop on my sample, and even with significant movements (4x5 and 6x17) does not increase noticeably.

Agreed. Slim versus regular thickness mount is different. Those are offered for linear polarizers too.

With the advent of auto focus and auto metering, most online vendors only mention circular polarizers. That may contribute to misunderstanding regarding view camera lenses.

yup, i guess center filter wasn't a need for current as i did a test roll at f16 shot, no dark corner appear at all

Hi rogue_designer, yup i would love to get the old tradition PL which is non circular type special for AF cam, but its kinda hard to get a PL filter in my country nowaday

as long u said a non slim is still fine, i'm good to go for a B+W or Heliopan now ! 😀

nope not center filter, main reason i need a PL is i'm a fully landscaper so for some reason i need it to reduce reflection especially from leafs in noon time.

my only concern is if i were to use a 67mm PL filter for this lens would it appear vignetting ? or its best if i get 77mm with a step up ring ?

Cool - thanks for the clarification.

You will not get any vignette with a 67mm regular filter. The only reason to go to 77 with a ring would be if you have other lenses that require 77 (so you don't need to buy multiples).

All my LF lenses are 67 or smaller currently, so I have all 67 filters and rings. (Or I use the Lee filters and holders).

Save a bunch of $ and get a linear pola. C-pola are only required for certain cameras for BTL metering and for Auto Focus to function properly. Pict wise there is no difference.

All my Tiffins have a green cast as do some older polas. I don`t know if you can get a linerat B+W, Heleoppn, Kasseman, or Leica but they are neutral colored.

You are aware that there is 90° angle between the opposites of a polarizer in either dimension? On very wide lenses that makes a polarizer a strongly graduated effect - you'll suppress reflection in part of the image and increase it in another.

which mean its not recomm to use any PL filter for such camera? hm i never came across this issue as i'm still new with my 617. i had been offered a nikon C-PL II 67mm filter which i still struggling to get or not to

here the pix i would like to share which taken recently as a appreciation for the input here 🙂

I have the original Schneider Center Filter for the 90mm F8 Super Angulon, I'd recommend it for 5x7, especially if using movements. Very nice shot, BTW 🙂

i just got a heliopan haze filter, but i do not sure if the filter really works on hazy situation... will try out and see

currently i'll skip the CPL for good 🙂
