I am simply amazed at the number of threads that fall into this category, both in this forum and on photo.net. The ones that really get me are the ones where the two halves of the equation are of very different character (e.g. Leica 50/3.5 Elmar vs. 50 Summilux Asph). But what is also amazing is that the answers are always the same! [It depends, what are you going to use X or Y for?, apples-to-pomegranates, X is better than Y, they'll have to pry Y from my cold, dead fingers and so on]. Much as I hate to say it, at current bandwidth the Web is not a great forum for actually comparing the subtleties of lens performance -- at least in terms of posting pictures. Sites like DPReview and Sean Reid's do a very good job, IMHO, because they tend to post detailed analysis of specific photographs in detail. But most of the responses to the X vs. Y query I have read tend towards generalization or report idiosyncratic experiences ("My [insert lens/camera name here] arrived with a [flaw, crack, junebug] in the [glass, metal, plastic, helicoids]. I'll never use [brand] again."]).
OK. Rant off. Donning asbestos undies and running for the hills.

It is the fish versus donkey thread that I am waiting for.

This should be fun. The only thing worse than preferring brand x to brand l is complaining about comparison threads...
Tom
PS I'm a fish man myself. Donkeys are too noisy.

A gold-fish has four colour receptors in its eyes like Fuji superior; a donkey is monochrome so clearly the donkey every time

This is, in the main, psychology. It ranges from - tell me I am still worthy even though I don't use a $3000 lens, to look how worthy I am because I can afford a $3000 lens; help me justify this s*** load of money I've just spent even though I can't really see any difference to my old lens; look I'm a bona fide member of the club; etc.
I find these threads interesting, usually very entertaining, encouraging when my own puchase decisions are confirmed and a great way of avoiding having to go out and take photographs

I've had two blue minis and one red one - the blue ones were definitely better, ergo, a blue hummer should be good to go, although you might want to think about a gold lexus

I'd go with the gold Lexus, you'd have a better chance of meeting the model over in FrankS' thread.

Ben, it's like a wreck (car, train, boats, people, whatever). We know we shouldn't look or waste time on it unless we can contribute, but we can't help it.
