Question on lenses for a Konica SLR

This is probably a dumb question so I apologize in advance.....my son-in-law has a nice Konica fs-1 that his dad gave him many years ago but only has an after market lens which is a zoom. My question is what lens mount does the camera take....I want to get a normal lens for him for christmas and havr no idea if the mount is proprietary or if it takes, for example nikon slr lenses. In addition if anyone knows where I might find the original Konica lens to purchase that would be even better.

Not a dumb question at all. Some cameras shared mounts with other brands, as Ricoh did with Pentax (P/K mount) for a period of time, but Konica did their own thing. The Konica mount is known as the Konica F-Mount; in your case, the mount is Konica bayonet II.

The Konica FS-1 was well-regarded, but it does not work without a functioning battery, so be sure you check that. Here's a link to a manual for this camera:

It appears from photos that the 40mm f/1.8 lens would have been original to this camera. I saw several examples on eBay. It might be as cheap to get the whole camera and then take the lens - for some reason, bare lenses sometimes go for more than the lens and camera combined (there's a tidy little business model in there somewhere).

Thank you!!! I will be looking on evilbay for the camera. You are right its cheaper to buy the whole camera than just the lens.

I have an FS-1, bought at a junk shop several years ago for $20 with a 28 and 40m lens. It has a very solid feel to it - all metal. The built in winder isn't too noisy, and runs on 4 AA batteries IIRC.

Ray, I inherited a Konica slr (t) from my dad, and rediscovered it a few years ago. Went to Ebay for a slew of lenses, which are excellent and highly regarded--really, kind of a sleeper among photogs out there, without the obvious cachet of a Nikon or Canon. That's good for us, because we get great quality at a low price. Takes its own mount, unfortunately. That 40mm pancake lens is great quality and really cheap, so that's a good one to start with. I have the 15mm fisheye which is top notch, and the 85mm 1.8 is also a great lens. I'm a huge fan of the system, obviously, though I don't pretend to be any kind of expert. I say go for it.

Frank and Sooner.......thank you for the info!!!!! I am right now looking at some normal lenses on KEH for very cheap.....amazing how such nice stuff can be soooo undervalued.

An earlier poster mentioned Konica F-mount. I believe this refers to the earlier Konica mount or Konica bayonet I mount. Konica bayonet II mount, the one that the FS-1 uses, is usually referred to as Konica AR mount, or K/AR mount, not to be confused with P/K i.e. Pentax K mount, and P/KR, Ricoh's enhanced version of Pentax K mount. And Pentax's own enhanced K mount is called P/KA.

I had at one time a very extensive Konica outfit. The Konica lenses were highly regarded in the 1970's, the quality on par with the best Nikons of the time.

I've recently sold off most of what I had just because I wasn't using it and I felt it really needed used. I still have the Konica 28mm with hood and a fantastic Vivitar Series 1 (Kiron) 35-85mm f2.8, which is a cult classic (I also have this lens in a Nikon mount which I use with my F3). I've got a TON of Konica SLR gear that I'm not using. My T3 has been CLA'ed by Greg Weber. The most knowledgeable Konica repair man. Sadly, I have 2 other 35mm kits that I don't use anymore either. Minoltas and Nikons. If you are interested, PM me. (T3, FT-1, 20mm, 35mm, 85mm, 100mm, macro....dang its a lot to list).
I tend to grab my Konica Hexar AF these days. (if I'm not shooting large format)

Ray, you're in for a treat.

Konica lenses have such a character that is hard to miss. Fortunate for us, good Konica lenses are cheap these days. My personal recommendations are:

50/1.4 (sharp, sharp, sharp), 35/2 (not so cheap, and quite rare, but it's worth it), and lastly but most interestingly....

80-200/4 UC Hexanon.
I do not like zoom lenses, but this one, I do, a lot.

Body-wise, my favorite is the Autoreflex T4 and the FT-1.

A month ago I found a Konica 21mm f4 with a FS-1 attached to it on a flea market.
The lens is massive, rather heavy, big chunk of glass.
It has a beautiful lens shade that holds to the lens rim by a little side-screw. The mechanical quality (of the lens) is obvious, beautifully made.

Has anyone got info on that lens?

I'm about to finish my first roll with it and neopan 1600.

PS: The guy who sold it to me also had a 200f3.5. Is that any good?

Branki, I used to own the 21mm f/4 lens, but sold it because it used to command prices around $500, and I didn't use it that often. Excellent lens as I recall, with very little if any distortion. I have the 200mm also, but don't really use it enough to describe its characteristics, other than it's a good lens. You generally can't go wrong, especially for the price.

I bought it right away when I saw it! It was laying piled up among some minoltas and old fujicas... obviously the seller didn't care much for it.

Now I am even more excited about seeing the results of that lens!

I've just found out there are, at least, two 200mm, one f4 one f3.5.

Thanks all!!!! I purchased a standard OEM lens from KEH in like new shape for like $49 plus shipping. Unreal!

Bschall and eric, the Konica is my son-in-laws....I will ask him if he would like to expand his meager kit as soon as I see him on Christmas. I will let you guys know.
