Got a Yashica GSN for my grand daughter. When I put a roll of color film through it I discovered that without a battery I can't set the shutter speed to any value, e.g. 125th or 250. Will I still get a correct exposure ? Or does it just work on Auto with the battery?

As far as I know the shutter speed at "Auto" without battery is 1/500s.
I use in my GS a CR123 Lithium battery plus a LR44 to get the correct voltage of the old mercury battery. Works well for BW film.
The full range of speeds is only available with a battery.
Be sure that the camera makes a clear audible "klunk" when you cock the shutter. If you don´t hear this, there is something wrong with the camera.

Hi, i remember the same...but if not wrong there was a slower speed available without battery....
On karen nakamurás website there´s a lot of info on the gsn!!!

That lens is awesome!!!

With no "klunk" sound as you cock the shutter usually means the dreaded " pad of death" (POD) has melted to a sticky goo and needs to be replaced if the camera is to fully function.
