Hello,

Just a quick question about some developing and scanning I had done at North Coast Photo in CA. This is the place mentioned by Ken Rockwell on his site. I sent them a roll of XP2 to develop and scan using their high resolution scanning service. The files come out 5035 x 3339 and are about 14MB. When opened on my computer they show a size of 69.931" x 46.375" at 72ppi. When looking at these files I notice that they have a very harsh and prominent grain.

If I resize them to 17" x 11" and go to 300ppi the harsh grain disappears.

I have included a link to an unchanged scan and one that I resized for you to check out. Look at the Original SIze files to really see what I'm referring to. I'm kind of new to all of this scanning stuff so forgive me if these are obvious questions.

Is this harsh grain normal? Is just playing with the size of the file an OK way to get rid of it? Also, what do you think of the quality of these scans from North Coast?

I'm really interested in your answers. Thanks!!!!!

Boisty

Inches and ppi means nothing on a computer monitor.
The picture is defined by the number of its pixels.

You upsized the picture a little and this enlarged the grain too making it less harsh.
