I've got a used Oly 35SP that I've only shot film in it using the fully auto mode in it. I wannt to use filters for bl/white film. My question is which way do I turn the ASA dial to set the camera for a colored filter, do I set the ASA dial for a higher ASA or lower a lower one? And one other question , whih way doy I turn the ASA diial for a 81A/ 81C filter and how much I turn the dial?

Thanks,
Bill

Most 81A/C filters have a factor of -1.30 on its ring so dial ASA down about 1/3 to 1/2 stop to compensate i.e. ASA100 down to 80-50

I would genuinely appreciate it if someone could answer my two quuestions regarding the Olympus 35SP:

1.) do you turn the ASA dial up or down to set the aperature for color filters:?

2.) what setting do you choose on the ASA dial for 81A & C filters?

Thanks,
Bill

Filters block light. You compensate by setting iso lower.

No one can tell you exactly where to set the iso dial as it depends on the speed of the film you are using and the compensation needed for the filter.

Cutting iso is half is 1 stop of compensation.

For filters, turn down the ASA dial, i.e. to lower numbers than box speed. This gives more exposure. For 81A&C it is about 1/3 of a stop, i.e. 64 if box speed is 100. What film are you using? Maybe your film latitude will tolerate shooting at box speed with those filters.

I think your questions are fairly simple to answer but it's very late at night so I have to wait until tomorrow to answer. The SP has a fantastic lens and a great meter. So the answer is simple. I just need to dig my camera out to get the answer.

With 400 speed film set the ISO to 300 for 1/2 stop of compensation. 200 for 1 stop of compensation. 150 for 1.5 stops, 100 for 2 stops...etc..etc..etc.

A 81a/c filter is about 1/3 of a stop compensation so somewhere around 330-340 is going to get you where you should be.

As a neopfyte, I don't understand. How many clicks is that on the ASA scale of the Oly 35 SP camera goinng to be at starting at 400?

No idea, don’t have a 35SP. Estimate that position between the 400 and 200 position. The filter you are using is pretty weak so just a little compensation is needed. Turn the iso dial slightly below 400 and go shoot, it will be fine.

A question not yet asked: if your plan is to shoot B&W film, why are you considering the use of color correction filters like 81a/81c? These filters are generally intended for color film applications, for "warmer". i.e. to remove different amounts of blue from ambient daylight. For B&W film, typical filter choices are yellow (-1 stop), orange (-2 stops), red (-3 stops), and green (-2 stops). Just curious.
