Hi

I like to fullfill me a long dream and my question is: Does someone know the difference between the first version 58mm Filter and the second version 60mm. Colour and sharpness.
Sorry Keith. It is a big dream.
Thanks to all

Use the search facility here at the RFF. Everything you ever wanted to know will appear.

Don't quote me, but I THINK that the optics are identical. The big difference seems to be the built in hood.

The optics are identical from the very first version through to the current version, which I believe is called v.3. The coatings may have changed through the versions. Version 1 (E58) is said to have a little more light fall-off than versions 2 and 3 (E60). Versions 1 & 2 have separate hoods. Version 3 has the built-in hood.

pfoto is correct. I have version 1 and really other than the removable hood and the 58 mm filter thread, there is little difference. I think ver 1 also says Leitz rather than Leica on it. Not sure if ver 2 says it.

The very first version, according to Sartorious, was f1.2. The second version (first in f1) came out with a detachable hood and a filter size of 58mm. The last version has a built-in hood and takes a 60mm filter.

I'll check the book later, but I'm pretty sure that's the story of the Nocti. Have fun shopping! 🙂

Ah yes, forgot about the 1.2 version, but that's more a collectible than anything right? It costs way more than the current version and is 1/2 a stop slower! No idea what the filter thread is on that.

From what I have been able to read online about the different Noctilux versions:

Version 1--f1.2, series 8 filter size, 6 elements (2 aspherical elements), highly prized collector's lens, made in Germany

Version 2--f1.0, E58, 7 elements, detachable pin-mounted hood, made in Canada

Version 3--f1.0, E60, earlier version had detachable pin-mounted hood, then later came the clip-on hood

Version 4--f1.0, E60, current version with built-in retractable hood

As far as rendering qualities, I am not so sure. Version 1 was said to have variable quality due to the hand-ground aspherical elements, and according to the Cameraquest site is thought to have slightly lower performance in general than the later versions. Most people seem to agree that the optical design of the remaining versions have been unchanged over time, only the barrel and hoods have been redesigned. It is not known for certain whether the lens coatings were changed at all over the years, as some have noticed a slight color difference in the reflections seen in photographs of the lens itself (brownish tint for earlier versions, greenish for later).

I may have inadvertently suggested elsewhere that the coatings may be different. With a brand new one in hand (398xxxx) and another slightly older (392xxxx), I can now confirm that they are the same:

My friend and I were just horsing around with the 50mm lenses. See if anyone can guess every single one:

Hacker, I believe you have exceeded the Noctilux limit. 1 is the limit! If you have 2, then you need to surrender one of them immediately. I can help you with this process. I don't care if you give me the new one or the slightly older one.

No, really!

Man, if those are all 50's, you're truly obsessed.😀

They are 50mm lenses indeed. We missed the M-Hexanon 50mm f2 as it was sold only a few hours early and not in the family portrait. 😀

run a test on all the 50s..... it'll help everyone here to decide which suits them best!!😀

and to you, which one do you like most, without testing, because I think it is personally?

If I had to chose only one and one only, most definitely the Summilux 50mm f1.4 ASPH. M-Hexanon f2, and Summarit f2.5 very good also. But as you said, it is personal.

Have not tested the ZM Planar nor the C Sonnar.
