Quick HU: Canon IIIA w 50mm/f1.5 Simlar lens

I did not get it- but cannot complain, got a Leotax D-IV with Simlar 5cm F1.5, and a Canon 85/2 for not much more.

The curtains on the Canon will need to be replaced.

The Simlar comes apart easily. The major components simply unscrew, allowing access to the surfaces. The grease in mine was solid, let it soak in Ronsonol for a few days. It is quite smooth now.

The Simlar is an interesting lens: a Planar formula lens that is a 1-3-2-1 design rather than the traditional 1-2-2-1. Many makers split various elements into lenses with lesser strength when pushing the design to F1.5 and faster. The Summarit was a 1-2-2-1-1, split the last element. The Nikkor 58/1.4 was a 1-1-2-2-1, split the front element. The Simlar split the front cemented pair into a cemented triplet to keep the number of air-glass surfaces the same as the 1-2-2-1.

It is a nice collectible, not as sharp as a Sonnar, closer to a Summarit. Bokeh is funky.
