I've been looking for an answer on the web with conflicting results. Thought I'd check with the experts.
And, thought I'd share some recent photos taken with my R-D1 and Voigtlander 21mm f/4 and Zeiss 50mm T* f/2. I really love this camera (and these lenses)!

12 bit. 14 bit is very new to DLSRs, only the latest in canon and nikons offerings have it... Possibly the m8 as well. In reality it doesn't make that difference for most people.

Here's a link to some of my photos on JPG Magazine (great place to
show and see photos...and possibly get published).
A lot are with the R-D1 (others are 5D, 10D, Digital Kiss).

I know that Nintendo games look prettier at 16 bits, later 32, 64, 128 etc. but 2 bytes difference .. you can imagine

Brilliant analysis tomasis. Seems you know quite 'a bit' about Nintendo, but, sadly for me little about digital cameras.

Actually 2 bits gives you 4 times more dynamic range in contrast (SFAIK - someone please straighten me out if I am wrong). What you are thinking of is the instruction set for physics computation, which is up to 128 bits in PS3, XBox360 and Wii. Graphics display has pretty much topped out at 32-bit, and that is overkill since consumer displays top out at 1000:1 contrast.
