R-D1 and Russian lenses

After hearing in the digital RF forums that FSU lenses and digital sometimes don't work, I wondered what you guys think of the matter.
I'll soon be joining the world of digital rf (95% certain it will be R-D1) but don't have a lot of spare cash to be spending on lenses and will have to stick with my Russian glass for the time being.

If any of you have experience of this combination maybe you could share your thoughts and opinions. I'd really like to know more.

Unless you spend your time looking at output on your computer at full magnification (where you'll see some softness wide open), the FSU lenses will just great on the R-D1. Just check focus is not too far off, which is often the most difficult part. I have used the J-3 and J-9 on the R-D1 and like the results.

never really cared for the few fsu lenses i had...never tried them on my rd1...since you already have some russian lenses try them when you get the camera and then evaluate the results to determine what you think.
if they don't work out for less than 200 bucks you can find a great canon 35 or 50 rf lens...

I used an industar 61 L/D during 2 years on my R-D1 and I liked the result; I sold it because it isn't fast enough for me.
I've got an Jupiter-11 and I really love the results on the Epson, but under f8 it's not easy to focus precisely - so I kept it but now I use that gorgeous lens on my Panasonic GH1.

Actually for most of my picture I use very wide lenses (18 > 24mm FF eq.) so there's no russian glass for my general use 🙂

The Jupiter-12 2,8/35mm was my normal lens for the RD-1s for years. Until I got my Summaron 35mm cleaned.

A good Industar or Jupiter will work very well on the RD-1s. The I-61L/D, I-50 rigid, J-8 and even J-3 shoot fine pictures- it won't be a night-and-day difference when you compare them with those shot with 'nobler' lenses.

I have the Jupiter-3 and use it on the my R-D1 more the than any other lens
I actually brought the lens with the idea of taking out of focus shots, so was not worried about the quality but I have been impressed with the shots I have been getting when I actually try for focused images 🙂

The J-8 works great with the R-D1. The color balance is pretty warm and it's not in the same sharpness league as my old 50mm 'cron or the 35/2 Biogon at 2.0 or even at 2.8, but when stopped down it is plenty sharp. Bokeh is nice and smooth and focus is accurate.

Thanks for the advice guys. Thats put my mind to rest about using my Russian lenses on the R-D1. All I have to do now is get an R-D1🙂

David, that's exactly my point. It applies not just to lenses, but just about everything: cameras and film included. If it works good, it's good. 🙂

I use Jupiter-12 35mm and Jupiter-3 50mm.
I like both very much!
Only one thing, if you do not like flares, you will have to be carefull.

Yeah, My J-3 tends to have that purple-ish sheen in the center of the images when I shoot towards the light. A lens shade would help a lot I would imagine.

No problem for me.

Considering the price of Jupiter-12 it's really nice lens for R-D1.

I've always preferred sticking with one lens and have used a Jupiter-8 on my Bessa R3a but as I'll soon be getting an r-d1 and prefer that field of vision. Any recommendations for FSU 35mm? The Jupiter-12 looks pretty popular.

Yes, every lens will be 1.5x crop... and Jupiter-12 "will be" ~50mm focal length.
FSU 35mm for LTM/M? I think only Jupiter-12.

Hi Back Alley,

Where can I find a canon 35/2 for less than $200? When I search ebay, I get lots of canon 35/2 but some say EF mount, some say FD mount and I'm a bit confused. Which, if either, is the one I should be looking for?
