Last night was photography night at the Kunsthaus Zurich - they had lectures on photography and people were allowed to take photos in the museum, but only for non-commercial use.

Here's a Flickr Slideshow and here's the Flickr Gallery.

I rented an Epson R-D1 for the weekend, and used it at the museum with my Konica KM-Hexanon 35/2. Images were shot in raw and converted to B&W with Epson PhotoRaw.

My impressions of the R-D1:

It feels really good in the hand, being heftier than the R2 I have. The dials on the top look really cool! The rear foldout LCD doesn't feel that solid - this is the first camera I'm using with a foldout LCD.

The shutter noise is very sharp - higher frequency than the M6 or R2.

Being digital, I wanted to see the image and histogram immediately after shooting - not possible with the R-D1. So after a while I just folded the LCD in.

Also annoying was that the LCD display mode (histogram) you set is not saved - if the camera goes to sleep you lose your chosen display mode.

Shooting speed with the card I had wasn't great. I could shoot only 2 raws in quick succession (maybe 2 fps) before having to wait for the buffer.

File quality looks great, I'd say equal to my Canon 20D, allowing for the resolution difference. Definitely noisier at 800/1600 but I haven't tried any serious noise reduction yet.

Raw Shooter Premium works fine with the Epson's raw files and is more powerful than Epson PhotoRaw. PhotoRaw has very useful B&W conversion settings with quick green/yellow/orange/red filter options.

All in all, I want one! Maybe the 2nd hand price will drop as the Leica M gets closer to release?

Hi,

Just a quick comment. If you set the LCD to display a histogram, it will do that each time you press the display button after an exposure. It would be better if that step were not necessary, of course, but it is possible. I share your frustration that the camera does not remember this setting when it goes to sleep, etc.

Cheers,

Sean

Told you that you would like it....................
I just use it like my R2a, very rarely use the screen, unless I want to show the pic to someone, or check some lighting....................
Best
