R-D1 Travel Support Question

johnmcd, in a previous thread here about traveling with the R-D1 talked about traveling with a lightweight Toshiba Portege M100. I'm curious about what others are using for travel computer/storage solutions and how they've outfitted any computers used on the road. Thanks.

I've been using an 80GB Apacer Share Steno. It's already quite old, with only USB 1.1 IIRC, but I can replace the disk inside with a newer, bigger one if and when I want to.

Lately, I'm looking at the Asus Eee PC. That's one cheap and very small laptop. Downside is that it only has an 8GB (!) solid state disk inside, or less, depending on the model. But for some Eu 300-400, for me these things are worth considering when traveling as the size of the laptop is great... eh, small... well, either. 🙂

If I'm not taking a laptop along I bring an Epson P-3000 which a 40GB drive. I backup to this, and also backup from there to additional CF/SD cards. It also plays movies and music, so it's great for keeping my daughter entertained on the plane.

If I am bringing a computer, I've always had a small laptop to travel with (several generations of Porteges or Vaios, but currently a Macbook Air). That computer is usually stripped down to just the apps and data I need and so has plenty of disk space, but then I also bring along an external drive to backup to as well.

Lots of film for me. if I run out I pick up some more. Sometimes I bring a mailer to a pro lab I use.

I always travel with my laptop and a small 150GB Firewire drive. The drive is powered via the Firewire connection so it cuts back on on cord to carry.

I also have a 20GB Digital Wallet that hasn't seen use in while. It worked but wasn't ever as trusty as I might have liked.

Just to expand on that post. The beauty of the small notebook is that they are powerful enough to run CS2 etc. All brands have similar but for example the M100 has a Centrino processor, 1gig ram, built in wireless, bluetooth, DVD/CDRW combo drive and a 60 gig drive. An added bonus is the built in SD card reader. All for $400 AUS on ebay. The original price was closer to $3000.

Even though I have always used PC's I also looked at Mac's but I couldn't find one with anywhere near the same specs for the price.

I would add that memory cards do fail. I prefer the assurance that my shots will be safe / backed up.

Yup. I did a 3 week vacation with my RD-1 and a 40gb Hyperdrive last year... really missed having the computer. Even the small Sony T series have an optical drive which you could burn DVD backups. So next trip I will bring a laptop AND the 40gb Hyperdrive.

Especially now that I am shooting with an M8 and shooting RAW. Kept the RD-1 though.. will shoot RAW on that this year also.

maybe because traveling as lightly as possible appeals to me, i like the simple approach of multiple cards. laptops, processing, burning, browsing, hmmm. if i'm doing pp on vacation, am i really getting away?
