I'm going to recommend a controversial tripod; the Cullman Magic II. In my opinion, it makes up the lack of sturdiness with its nice design and portability. It is one of the few (if not the only one) tripods that can reach full height and still fold completely flat. It slides right into my messenger style camera bag and it is pretty lightweight. It comes with a QR ball head and the center column can be combined with one of the legs to form a monopod.
You'll find a lot of reviews on the internet complaining about the lack of stability and sturdiness but mine has served me quite well and sees a lot of use. Warning, this is only for a lightweight setup.. I would never recommend this tripod for anything but the lightest of cameras+lens. It works just fine with my R-D1.
For heavier more sturdier tripods, start browsing the catalogs of Gitzo and Manfrotto.
