Ed...maybe it appears that way but I live my life in a way that lets all
things flow naturally...my own kinda Zen....the lens is beautiful...a great buy for someone...not me.....
some times you have to know when to surrender........
I surrender with this lens......maybe it sounds crazy but that's how I am....
I sold 2 M8's cause they just didn't flow with me....I will definately get another M8 in the future but only when I hold it in my hand and it's mine.....(and the damn thing works better than my Eppi...)
that feeling isn't here with this lens.......
later...don

myself and other R-D1s (not R-D1 with upgrade) users have run into issues with certain Leica lenses..
My 75 Summilux would not focus properly on my R-D1s, it would turn to a certain point, then it would 'slip' out. I sent the body in for DAG to check out, everything was fine, but the issue still exists.. thus i sold the lens. The summilux worked fine on my M7.
I have since use a CV75, CV 40, and other CV lenses and they work fine. I also have Rokkor 40 and 90 lenses and both work fine also..

Yeah, there's definately an issue there...the lens worked on all my bodies....but the Eppie was a no go...the buyer is gonna use it on an M8...so I'm sure that will work out fine.....the bearing on the eppi cam is larger than on the M's....and the CL too...so, I think that the cam was hitting the mount after the lens went so far....no biggie.....I'm only hoping that the Nokton will work ok.....
but that 40 Summi is soooo small...man it's a great lens.......

Some lenses do not couple properly, and it has nothing to do with their year of production or so. It's randomly. My 75 Lux does not on the R-D1s, but did on the R-D1. I guess the Epon's helical position is at the end of the tolerance for certain, mostly Leica, lenses. I really don't know what to do with the Lux.

Funnily enough, i have got focusing problems with the M-Rokkor 40/2 for Minolta CLE (flat cam) but none with my 3 copies of the Summicron-C 40/2 (sloping cam).
Perhaps the Rokkor needs some CLA i don't know.
Anyway, all the cron 40/2 have the same sloping cam AFAIK and the RF trackers of the R-D1 and R-D1s look exactly the same, at least in my bodies.

Don... I hope you like the 40mm Nokton - I had one, and it was great - only thing was, the early ones had a tendency for the lens mount to get a bit wobbly, so they changed the design. Mine was an early one, so I sold it before it developed problems (I'm a bit neurotic that way
)
If you see a CLE Rokkor at a good price (you can tell them because the number is on the barrel, not on the front of the lens) you should grab it - it has a different 'look' to the Nokton, and mine is just as nicely made as the Summicron. It will complement the Nokton rather than replace it.
Anyway, good to hear the saga with the 'cron ended happily

LCT - I agree with you that the rollers look to be exactly the same, but the roller on the 's' seems to be a little lower in the mount (you can see a gap at the top that isn't there in the first photo) - it could be the angle of the photo, but to me it does look as though the roller in the 's' is a fraction lower in the throat - maybe it can just foul the barrel of some lenses? Perhaps this is just a bit more tolerance in the position of the roller compared to Leica bodies?
Any thoughts?

Watching them with a loupe i see no difference at all.
Didier, sorry for your 75/1.4 but it is by far too fast for the R-D1 and R-D1s IMHO.
My cron 75/2 works fine at f/2.8 but i would need a magnifier to use it at full aperture if any.
Anyway for those interested here's a list of lenses with no focusing problem at any aperture on both my R-D1 and R-D1s bodies:
Summicron-M 28/2.0 asph # 11604 (2005)
Elmarit-M 28/2.8 asph # 11606 (2006)
Summaron 35/2.8 # 11106 (1959)
Summicron-C 40/2.0 # 11542 (1972, 1973 & 1974)
Summilux-M 50/1.4 # 11868 (1996)
Summilux-M 50/1.4 asph # 11891 (2005)
Summicron-M 50/2.0 # 11819 (1978)
Elmar-M 50/2.8 # 11824 (1994)
Elmar-M 50/2.8 # 11831 (2004)
Elmar 90/4.0 # 11131 (1957)

It appeared to me that the focusing barrel...was somewhat closer to the inner part of the mount than any Leica lens that I have....
It's even true for my 28 Ultron....if this means something or not, well, that remains a mystery to me....at any rate, I am hoping that the Nokton will satisfy my ...temporary needs.....thanks all...don

I'm still not sure from your original post exactly what was wrong.
When you tried to focus, it was locked? Not moving at all? Not engaging the cam?
I once had an M lens that refused to mount on my R-D1 and a very tiny bend to one of the bayonet claws with a plier solved the whole problem.

Ed and all...it seems that on certain 40mm Summicron and Rokkors, the focusing helical is closer to the lens mount barrel...this conflicts with the movement of the rangefinder cam....I got this 1st hand from looking at many of my Leica lens and a few Leitz too...
I just got the 40mm Nikton from Gilles and tested it and man...it works great...love it....but...the helical barrel is exactly the same as the leica lenses....
soooo pulling out my CL and CLE....definately a smaller rangefinder cam....that explains it.....
at any rate...you people are the best....I now have my lens that matches my eye/brain/camera......
thanks again all.....hey...Gilles is a great guy......strong recommendations for him......don
