Well, the 40 Summi arrived today and for some reason...it won't focus on the eppie...
seems like the rangefinder cam is locking up on the helical mount of the lens.....bummer....really a bummer.....
any suggestions

sell the summicron and buy a CLE vintage 40mm m-rokkor?
there are, as you probably know, two versions of the Rokkor, and I think (?) the Summicron is like the older one - it has only a single helical thread, and so the cam is sloped at the back.

The later one (the CLE version) has two helicoids, like other 35mm lenses, and there is a continuous circular cam at the back.

If your summicron is like the first type, there have been reports of it not being compatible with the R-D1 rangefinder cam follower. I've got the CLE type, and it works fine.

My summi 40 with the sloped cam works fine on my R3a so long as I have it at close focus when I put it on.. I thought the R-D1 finder mechanism was the same..

well, I tried everything....it ain't working....bummer I just got this off ebay and now I have to sell it....

I also have a 40mm Nokton coming tomorrow and I hope the thing works.....bummer...this lens is in beautiful condition...I will list it here to sell it to a member before going to ebay....

any other suggestions....?

Post a clear photo of the rear of your Summicron lens and the cam follower of the R-D1.

Phil's got it right.....I can't change destiny...the lens is meant for another user...not me.....it's really nice but the love affair died rather quickly...hopefully the Nokton tomorrow will be a winner....

my camera works with almost every Leica Lens I have but ...well....time to move on....don

I predict that you will like the Nokton. Just a little bigger, but twice as fast, better built, easier to get filters.

The Superstar among the CV lenses, IMO.

Roland.

I have 3 copies of the Summicron-C 40/2.
They all work fine on both my R-D1 and R-D1s bodies.
Here the tracker of an M4-2 and the sloping cam of the cron 40/2.
I can't figure out how the tracker can lock up on the cam.
M4, when you push gently the tracker with your thumb does it move smoothly?

My lens is dated "73"....the focus cam moved like butter and the lens off the camera has the smoothest focus travel as any Leica lens....dunno, maybe Phil is right about this being the wrong lens for the camera....don

Not my feeling at all. Good sharpness, nice colours, reasonable contrast and smooth bokey, this lens is one of my favourite with the R-D1.

Yeah, it's kinda a bummer....I love German Glass...especially Leica....I ordered a 40 Nokton from a member here and I am really hoping that the lens can cut it.....obviously, this Summi is not for me...but it's sooooo good looking for a 73....man, gonna hate to part with this one...don

Perhaps it needs a CLA...

Nah...it's almost like new.........silky smooth focus crisp with no slop at all....aperture very crisp with no drag.....nice lens.....

it's my luck anyway......besides, I got the Nokton coming tomorrow and maybe inside....I knew that was a better choice.....don

If it has not been used in 30 years it may well need a CLA.
Anyway you'll like the Nokton's bokeh hopefully.
I don't personally but it's a matter of tastes i guess.
Now i did not try the SC version so far

I have several 40mm Rokkors and two 40mm Summicrons. Have used them on various R-D1's (and Leica M8) flawlessly.

I can't imagine what would cause the problem you're describing. It doesn't make sense.

I see see a mild focus misalignment, but not working at all?

Something is grossly wrong.

Nah...Philis definately right. I contacted a friend of mine who repairs at Leica and he confirmed what Phil said. The R-D1 and the R-D1s have slightly different roller cams. The lens I have was used on a CL system with no problems...it works on my M's..all of them...I guess Epson re-did the rangefinder on the 1s and maybe that's why I have a problem with this lens........

he also stated that there were 2 different helical focusing systems in the 40 Summicron and in the Rokkor......so maybe even tho this year, 73, should be ok...maybe this lens has the other helical barrel in it.....

dunno, don't care....it's gonna be sold tomorrow and that will end this saga....hopefully, the Nokton will prove to be a winner......don

You seem to be overly fatalistic and in a big hurry to dump the lens when a little investigation and troubleshooting would probably solve the whole "problem".
