R3A shipping soon

A heads up for those in the UK: Robert White has them in stock, and for a very reasonable price : £350 +VAT. Mine's arriving on Wed😀

Another bargain (at leas I think so) at the moment is at WHSmith, where they are selling the HP printer scanner copier 1205 for only £39.99. Cheap enough to buy just as a copier, and will even enlarge a print up to A4 without a computer, and perfectly decent quality(though of course not stunning)

Too bad that I already pre-ordered at a German dealer. Otherwise I would order at Robert White, too. Here they expect the R3a to arrive end of December/beginning of January!!! So probably I will not have a very nice X-Mas present for myself... how frustrating.

Received the r3a today. I'm pretty impressed, especially because my serial number is in the 40s - does that make me an early adopter?🙂 It was shipped so early that the instruction booklet is to follow in a week or so.

Same here. The manual wasn't included because it would have held up the initial deliveries, so everyone is getting the R3a with Japanese manual, with the english to follow later.

Did yours come with a Japanese manual, or without any at all??

Mine came without any at all, but they did email me a word file. However, it does not have any pictures, including the one that shows what all the parts are for. Now, I think that I have worked everything out, but if someone could either scan and post the picture(s) or find a link on the net, they would be doing a fair few people a useful service.

Thanks,

David

You know, if I get home and mine isn't waiting for me I will feel so terrible.

Now I won't be able to do anything this afternoon.......

I'll be disappointed, too, but I have a feeling that's my fate. I was supposedly to be in the "first shipment", but I didn't get the email alert from Gandy that some others did. I suspect I'll get it in a later shipment.

I am pretty sure I'll survive 🙂

Well, I ddn't get an email alert either, but I paid in full a while ago to take advantage of the free shipping. I want to see Trey today!

Mine is here!!!

Everyone note that there is a piece of paper inside the body over the shutter, best to open the back and remove the paper before playing with it. That is probably on the first page of the manual, but since it is only in Japanese for now you may miss that warning.

John, the viewfinder surprised me. Like I said, the 40mm framelines are right on the edge of my vision through it, but it is very big, bright and clear.

I like the display inside the finder on manual mode, I would have liked to see the aperture displayed too, but it isn't. The body is similar to the R2 in feel, but with a better, stronger rewind nob and film advance. I like the door release, a little lever at the base of the film rewind knob. A much better mechanism than pulling up on the knob itself. The shutter speed dial is definately designed for the camera to be shot in A mode. There will be no quick changing of shutter speeds with one finger with the R3a. The shutter sound is more of a lower toned "thunk" compared to the R2's "clack." I think the tone gives the impression that it is quieter, it will definately be lost in the background noise more than previous Bessa shutters.

Overall I would say it is what I expected, a bit more refined than the R2, but definately in the family.

Remember, check for that little piece of paper in the body before you play, and store it in manual mode. I put it in my bag in A with the shutter charged, and accidentally tripped the shutter. With the lens cap on it opened the shutter in B and didn't close, when I took the lens cap off it closed.

I agree with Rover on the 40mm frames. Definitely on the edge of my vision as well. I truely love the 1:1 finder and being able to use both eyes when framing. I can see that being very handy for street or action type work. The AE lock button is well placed and easy to operate. Everything else pretty much minics Rovers comments.

The miracle has happened - I got a mail from my dealer that the R3a reached Germany and is waiting for me 🙂 Now I will just have to survive the next week. Hopefully I can take the first shots next weekend.

Ahhh...it has arrived.

First thoughts -

1) Thanks to Rover for the head's up about the slip of paper inside the camera.

2) The 40 framelines are waaaaay out there. Any thought of using a 35 and using the edge of the finder as a guide is out the window.

3) 1:1 viewfinder is beyond cool.

4) Build quality is R2-like - essentially, it is an R2.

5) The mini-release, which I recommend, sits higher in the shutter button than it did in the R2. Don't know why, but I like it.

6) Really like the display in the viewfinder.

Early impressions - positive. Can't wait to get out with it.

Mine arrived on monday, and while I think the ability to see with both eyes open is great, the framelines are kinda dim to me either that or the spacings btwn the framelines are a bit too wide for me, but the overall effect is that I don't feel like I have a definite grasp of the frameline (this is all in reference to 50mm framelines).

the shutter's noise is a noticeable metallic "thack" which is a bit louder than I would have liked. one interesting thing is the eye piece can be unscrewed and in effect it acts as a separate glass layer protecting the viewfinder glass itself. which is great cuz its much easier to clean a big round glass than a small rectangular glass. plus even the eye piece glass is multi coated which shows the effort put into details.
