I see where the price of the Bessa R4 on Stephen Gandy's site has gone, in a short time, from $650 to, I think, $679, and now to $750, in almost no time. I like to think about getting something for a while before I get it. But if I get it now, I will feel like I lost $100. If I don't get it now, I will worry about the price rising higher.:bang: Not a question, really. Just wanted to say that.

Same thing happened with the R3 as I recall. 😕

Hi, see if you like these prices. This is where I got my R2A and 50/1.5 from. It's a Singapore site, though. But the guy is upfront and no BS.

Not sure how much shipping will be, though. No harm trying. 🙂

R4 prices -- my Hong Kong experience

R4 prices -- my Hong Kong experience

I don't think that Cosina has raised the price, and any yen/dollar exchange rate variations of late would not explain the USD price rise. I am just back from Hong Kong, where I bought my R4 last week for under US$600. The HK dollar is pegged to the USD and thus would be subject to any yen/dollar variations, had those been an issue. Of course, if you were doing mail order you'd have to add shipping to wherever you are.

Maybe it's just in much higher demand than expected? Maybe the prices will go down after a production run or two. Just a guess.

supply and demand, HK style

supply and demand, HK style

Supply and demand may account for part of it. But maybe HK suppliers are content with the profit they can make on lower margins/higher volume. The market for this type of gear is a niche that depends upon repeat business and thus a happy loyal customer base. The vendor who sold me mine said that I got the last one of his initial shipment of 50 bodies, which was sold out within a day of arrival. I suppose he could have tried raising his price to see what the traffic would bear. Since I was aware of the US price, and presumably he was too, there was ample room to squeeze a bit. But I'm sure he made a profit and I'm happy too.

a more perfect market?

a more perfect market?

Also, I should hasten to add, HK is a small place with a competitive market, all vying for a self-selected group of well-informed shutter bugs. So any vendor would be aware of another local vendor's pricing, and would assume that the customer base would be aware as well. It's not a sole-supplier situation.

It would be interesting to hear Stephen Gandy explain this - we are all just speculating and trying to justify the price increase.

So.......what's up with the rapid price increase Stephen?
