radio segment on Leica - Interesting

Deborah Copaken Kogan had made some comments in her book when it was first published in 2001 on James Nachtwey and her interactions with him.

In a 2003 article published on The Digital Journalist website (digitaljournalist.org) she either said, or was misquoted as saying, some rather disparaging comments about Nachtwey who in turn made a point to reply to her statements.

...and here is Copaken Kogan's response to Nachtwey;

Interesting radio show, but where on what Leica is there an aperture setting on the top deck?

And the Zeiss lenses - maybe her choice of lens for her camera? Or is she just full of photobabble? And "Shutterbabe?" Is she maybe too full of herself?

Goes to show you that the real photographers don't waste time getting all the "terminologies" down.. or can recall all the versions of the Leica 50 cron that was ever made and all the particularities of each version.

... or what that doohicky atop the camera next to the wheely thing is called. Or what it does. (shrug) Then again, I never put a book together explaining all this photo-stuff as she has.

What is a "real" photographer, one that struggles with the difference between fact and fiction?

Ms. Copaken Kogan styles herself on being a photojournailst of some repute, perhaps spending more time getting "all the terminologies down" wouldn't hurt.

Agreed, but why set yourself up like that with a radio interview? When I don't know what the hell I'm talking about (often) I try to duck and keep in the shadows near the back of the room. Near the exit. Not have Katie Courick interview me.

I was at at a book-reading of hers a few years back when Shutterbabe (yes, I have it) first hit the racks. Kogan was quite pleasant to talk to (and talk shop with just a bit), but I knew I wasn't in the presence of a technical big-brainer. I don't even think she regards herself as an especially great photographer, either, simply someone who has been some places and experienced some things a lot of us haven't...no more, no less. She's not terribly full of herself, which is largely why I cut her a bit more slack than others who puff themselves up quite a bit more while making rather similar gaffes.

And, judging from the book's cover, at least she knows the right way to handle a Leica.
