I'll post this here, since it seems that this report or a one prior is being misinterpreted on other site(s).

I'm in Chicago most of this week, and this morning I caught on the local news a blurb that Metra and Union Pacific (I didn't know they were related, but what do I know, I'm not a townie) had rescinded a prior ban on photography and now do allow photos taken from Metra platforms.

They said that the railway cops do (still) reserve the right to question anybody acting suspiciously, with or without a camera.

They did go into some detail, citing some civil right organization (ACLU?) and also the fact that they realized it was futile to try to increase security by banning photography of things that have been photographed and published in detail before.

Looks like sanity may have actually prevailed here ... 🙂

The news was in NPR this morning, and later I read it in the Tribune. I didn't even know about the prohibition! 😱

Bu then, as you said, it seems common sense prevailed after all... 🙂

How's your Kodachrome shooting?

I knew about the prohibition only because I was reprimanded by a Union Pacific employee a couple of months ago for taking pictures on the platform. Glad to hear it's been lifted.

Nice stuff Ken.

There was a major stink about this locally for the last two weeks - I think the media pressure helped get it rescinded. Railroad photography is my specialty (not RF)... http://www.pbase.com/kjford.

I usually shoot Steam engines on various Eastern and some Colorado areas. This comes up quite oftern on the various railroad forums. I'll include my usual link here...

Although I will say that if you stay off of railroad property you are USUALLY better off.
