Ralph Gibson Leica Monochrome sells out in 5 mins.

Hey Greg,

There has been no end of 'sturm und drang' ( I think that's German for 'Sony sucks') about this event on RFF, mainly arguments between those who are shocked by the treachery of former film user Gibson , and those who blather on about how he's ninety years old and a proven talent and he can use any tool he wants and all what matters is the final result not the process and ink jet prints are the equal of silver prints except when they 're not and futzing with images in Photoshop is exactly the same as dodging and burning and so forth and so on.

I've been bored and depressed (did you hear about Philip Seymour Hoffman?) so I read some of it ;-(

Yea really bad news about Philip Seymour Hoffman. He was a fantastic actor. I won't judge him on his personal life. That was his business alone & hey, what's really truth & what is fiction. Just like Ralph Gibson. Doesn't bother me one bit he went digital & Kudo's to both Mr. Gibson & Leica for hitting a home run. I hope they both made a pot full of money. I always wanted a RG signature MP. That is one beautiful camera. Cheers to ya Randy.

Personally I've never liked his photographs and why one would want to spend $ 9,500 -- oops, I mean $28k -- for a camera with his name on it is a mystery.

I know a guy that was a collector of Leica cameras and lenses. He just sold his Leica collection and he had some pieces that were made in small #s. He made a fortune. Seriously. I mean good retirement kind of money. He said he did as good or better than he would have in the stock market. For some of the people that bought this special edition camera it was an investment. Pure and simple.

I am a photographer and prefer to use my tools and I use them hard. Never worth much after a while with me LoL.

Gibson is one of my favorite photographers. Sometimes you have to look into the negative space in his work. He has a very unique way of seeing.

You usually know one of his images when you see it.
He was a photographer for the Navy and worked for Dorothea Lange for a while after he got out of the Navy.

Gibson is a smart guy, and I admire his style, particularly the early stuff.
As to buying stuff on basis of rarity, or because "A Celebrity" touched it, the greater fool theory applies. As long, as you believe NOT to be the greater fool, all is OK 😀.

If I'd had a spare thirty K ... who knows? 😀

Exactly.
We "marvel" because it's beyond our reach.
How many here on RFF would buy it given the chance and the money?

If I were Leica, I'd be kicking myself for not planning for 100 units instead. 😀
