Ralph Gibson MP = Hideous?

Far more tasteful...

So hard to choose ... the Ralph Gibson or The Beehive Box Camera?

Tough call. In all fairness the Gibson camera has other practical benefits such as:

  • Bird Scarer.
  • Attracting passing aircraft should your photo project result in being marooned.
  • The addition of hooks would turn it into a great game fish lure (See above)
  • The colour would convince young teenage girls that an older photographer is 'hip' and put them at ease for the photo shoot.
  • Nobody would evern knowingly steal it. The Ukraine robbery was probably either a mistake or somehow involved LSD.
  • Useful in 'gags' to convince others that they are colour blind.
  • Perfect for Austin Powers themed parties.
Looking at the above it seems I was too hasty before. This Gibson camera was really well considered after all.

The Ukrainian robber was probably color blind!

We had a couple colorblind students in my advanced photo classes at Rice U. They both tried to do color printing and could not get balances right. They switched to black and white, and were much better at that.

all a matter of taste isn't it ...

I wouldn't buy the RG one, but I do have an M4 (chrome) with the bright red leather covering, and I had an M4 with British racing green leather cover, lots of people found this hideous, I liked it.... at least you can get "street" portraits with a smile..

I didn't see one camera in that list I wouldn't absolutely DIE FOR.
Surely this is the right idea for street shooters. Sure, you'll get "caught" a bit more often, but who's gonna be upset?

Now that I'm thinking about it (and this isn't the first time I've brought the idea up), how about an RFf Limited Edition MP, just to show 'em how it should be done?

Take your standard-issue MP:

- Add an M7-type rewind knob (know anyone who ever broke off an M4 knob?).

- .58 magnification (not my fave, but favors wide-angle shooting, where Leica rules).

- Framelines up to about 75mm.

- Black paint. Everywhere.

- NO engraving whatsoever. ("No inscription at all? Ah, must be an RFf edition!")

- Vulcanite, baby!

Prediction: limit the edition to the same number as Gibson's, and purchasers will need an assigned armed guard present at the time of purchase to help assure they get home alive with their new pride and joy, while Solms struggles with how to unload their unwanted RGs without losing (too much) face.

How about it, Jorge? 😀

P.S. Rethinking the "no inscription" idea, I'd opt for a modest, RFf-centric inscription...on the inside of the camera, just as a proper Japanese kimono is worn with its elaborate fabric pattern inside, against one's body, with the more plain finish on the outside. A photographer's Masonic handshake for the 21st Century. No need to thank me...

Barrett,

If I was ever going to get an MP a la carte (which I wont cos I cannot justify the extra money) it would be practical & minimalist a la extreme rather than pretty. More a 'tiger tank' than ferrari:

MP
Black Chrome (Appears the be better, deeper finish a la carte than M6/7s etc)
No inscription on top plate
M7 leatherette probably...
0.72 finder, 3 frames only
MP rewind (Who rushes street shooting? I tend not to blast off rolls for each subject so you have time to change film between subjects when convenient. $240 for a different rewind saving 10 seconds?? I would take the M4 rewind if it was equally priced but 240 bucks...thats bonkers.

Thats it. Basic. Few people would think to steal it (even fewer Leica snobs!), very practical an uncluttered. Also only a few hundred more than std MP/M7.

If RG had only gone for black saddle leather or genuine black leather vulcanite the camera would have been rather nice. Oh, and he should have included the preview lever, silly billy.

I agree with prev posters tho; I am glad for Lecia collectors as they help keep Leica afloat. Therefore Leica must come up with well concieved cameras not more Gibson cameras!

By the way the knob rewind is not slower than the crank. If you just pull it out and then run the edge of your hand along it you can rewind a roll lickety-split.

I like Gibson's work, especially the older stuff, but that camera just looks like a turd.

Chimp eating berries comes to mind....moving on however:

Interesting, I had not thought of trying that with the rewind knob. Will give it a go...
