I havea few questions about RF adjustment on a Leica M. It's not something that I can do myself, is it? How much should it cost from a general tech (Not DAG, Krauter, etc)? Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I am not sure how much the better repair guys would charge but I had an RF problem with an M4 and it was not too difficult to fix. More info here http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23130

My M6 is out slightly at infinity as well, although it's not too far out andf I haven't had the nerve to try to correct it myself yet (and yet I CLA my own lenses...). It's not supposed to be too difficult, but without the tools is a trial and error thing. The eccentric on the roller adjusts infinity, and the screw at the base of the arm for the rest. From my understanding, adjust the eccentric till infinity matches, then check something close at say 1 or 1.5 meters. If that's off, adjust the arm and then the eccentric again for infinity, repeat 'till correct. Sounds too simple really, but it should be all that there is. I was also told than in most cases it's just the eccentric that goes off, and so in most cases you don't have to touch the arm.
I think I may try adjusting mine after this block of summer classes end and I don't have to use it every day, just in case...

Thanks for the help, guys. Took it to my tech..turns out the vertical adjustment was off too, he said he could take care of it for $85. Cheap enough to make it worth not fiddling with myself, I think.

In the Netherlands it costs app 50 Euro, but I have no experience with the guy offering the service.
Wenn I called Solms they hinted they would do it for free if you visited them
(you live close to Solms???)

I'm used to every camera repair costing me $150, so thats why $85 didn't seem to bad. Sounds like it's a bit high now, compared to everyone else, but the guy does good work I think. If it goes out again, it's going right back to him and I will not be prepared to pay. 🙂

Wish I lived closer to Solms..hahah..

If you google on it you will find some references on it.

Main problem is that Leica changed the screw behind the red dot that adjusts the vertical alignment in the later models.
From a standard screw it became a special screw that needs a special tool in order to turn it.

Although there are some DIY ideas of manufacturing it, this does not seem to be trivial. The other option is to take the top plate off, and then aparently it is easier to access the screw and then a plier might be used in stead of the tool

All in all not something for your first camera repair it seems.
