Rangefinder app anyone?

Hello,

Has anyone here found a good iPhone app for measuring distance? I have a couple of scale focus cameras, a Rollei 35S and a Zeiss Ikonta 521. For the most part I'm able to guess, but as I usually carry my iPhone and use it as a light meter, I thought it might be nice to use it to measure distance the odd time I want to be more precise.

Does the iphone have an IR sensor? If not, I imagine it focuses by sensing local contrast / sharpness within the frame - not by knowing how far something is.

I use such an app for Android, when I want to measure critical distances with my Perkeo.
Works a treat. Sorry, don't know if something like that is available for iOS.

Not a 'rangefinder' as such (or at least not what we think of as one when we talk cameras) because that would require two seperate lenses on the iPhone, but I do use the EasyMeasure app. The review scores for it are quite low but I suspect that is because the initial calibration is not done properly or the user does not understand the trigonometry principle used to derive the distance. Admittedly there are a fair few limitations to its use, but if you are on the same level as the object you require the distance to, hold the iPhone at the height you calibrated it to, and sight on the base of the object you will get a perfectly usable value for a scale focus camera. The app is free too, although there are some pop-up nags.

It's called "Smart Measure". I wouldn't use it with a Noctilux DOF, but it's accurate enough for my Perkeo, wide-open.

Or go old school. A Watameter fits the shoe of my Rollei 35s & Minox GL. Squinty, yes, but no batteries required. All credit to Zeno (RFF Petronius).

I've tried several distance ranging apps on the iPhone but none of them seems useful to me. I bought a 1950s Voigtländer clip on rangefinder instead.

I use a rangefinder app when I forget to bring one, but in reality I only use a rf when it is under 10 ft or so.
