Short question: what is the purpose of the "black" tape on top of the rf-assembly?

I've seen a lot of pictures of different Leica rf-assemblies, there was always a piece of black tape/foil on top of them.
Is it some kind of light shield?

I'm asking because this is how it looked like on my 1964 M2:

I taped it back the first time I took the top plate off because it was loose. The pinkish foil (?) was taped in place with a piece of clear tape.

btw. the L-seal was intact as I got my M2 (it's not exactly a pleasant feeling to destroy it  ...but it had to be done)

As I had/wanted to take the top off again to check the slow speed governor and to clean a minor smudge on the rangefinder window inside (I was so stupid to leave it there and it was bothering me ;) )
This time I "replaced" (taped over) the foil with a piece of black electrical tape... as it seems to be black and opaque on all other rf-assemblies, it must clearly serve a purpose:

So? What's the purpose of it? Is it shielding off potential reflections against the top plate? Is it there for shielding off light coming from the front? And why the hell was it translucent and pink on my (formerly L-sealed) M2? ;)

I don't have guts to open my M. But in some others cameras I have seen light shields like this in RF and other areas on top part of the camera.
Have you checked in service manual for M2 with all parts listed?

I checked the english service guide/"repair training program"...

yes, it's there on one figure!... then on all others it disappears... and it has no number

it's a mystery!

Interesting. The pink thing doesn't look opaque at all. Maybe to keep out dust. One might expect that some dust could get in beneath the shutter speed dial and the advance mechanism and inside the RF/VF it would be particularly unwelcome.

THIS...

For the cost of the piece of tape it's a cheap addition that would make difference.

I wonder if the later bodies (M6 onwards) have this.
