I have been reading post here for a while but never posted. Trying to be more active in the future...:)

I wonder if there are any monthly rangefinder magazines out there? Here in Sweden we only have photogaraphy magazines of a more genereal character.

I have read about the Rangefinder Magazine, but as far as I can see, it's not only rangefinder articles there.

Any suggestion of english speaking (or german maybe...) rangefinder magazines?

There are no rangefinder-specific magazines that I know of. Rangefinder Magazine is a magazine intended for professional photographers, with an emphasis on portrait, event, and wedding photographers. It is an excellent magazine, but has little or nothing to do with rangefinder cameras.

isn't LFI a RF centric magazine? i wonder if anyone would be keen on starting one among ourselves. a pdf version mailed out every month with articles / photos of folks here.

Discusses the business side of being a pro photographer.

LFI is primarily about rangefinders. But, it's "Leica Fotografie International," so it's only about Leica gear, with occasional mention of other brands. Most of the technical articles are written by, or seem like they're written by Erwin Puts, so if enjoy that kind of thing....

There are usually profiles of photographers, which is the only reason i sometimes find it interesting. But, the subscription price is relatively high, and it's not really a good "value" magazine. I've never seen it on a newsstand, so it may be by subscription only.

As mentioned above, RANGEFINDER magazine seems to be primarily for/about various forms of commercial photography, but there is a wedding-heavy bias. The magazine title is misleading, as rangefinders are not often featured, although some of the profiled photogs do use them, and that fact is usually reported with some weight.

I would love ANY kind of magazine that embraces the same aesthetic as this forum. I think the ideal would be something like Aperture, except with gear geeking as well as art talk.

IMHO, Rangefinder Magazine is nothing more than ads and articles that are really just ego trips for photographers who pay to be in there. There just seems to be no substance. Is there any wonder that they send it out for free. Classy junk mail to me. Goes right into recycling. Sorry to be harsh. Lenswork just went digital and has substance and this magazine just kills trees.

Rangefinder is put out by WPPI and is generally considered useful to wedding, event, and studio portrait photographers. It is rather narrowly tailored. If you are not one of those, I can understand not finding it useful.

I usually enjoy it.

Rangefinder magazine used to be pretty good. Then somewhere along the line the whole thing became a giant advertisement for some wedding photographer association. And every other article was about shooting a wedding, buying a camera for a wedding, an interview with a wedding photographer, information on seminars for wedding photographers and you get the idea. Occasionally you can find one or two good pieces in there. But it's gotten terrible.

Some of my favourite photo mags are Photo Techniques, Picture, and Photo District News (PDN).

Have you ever read Dirt Rag magazine? It's a magazine for mountain bikers. But I think that sense of community the magazine has, and also its approach to its subject would be a great format for a Rangefinder magazine. Even in the back of each mag there's a 10 page spread of photos by its readers who submit art. Some of the articles are even reader submissions. It's great. We'd just need someone to organize the whole thing. I worked at a small regional magazine for a year and it was a pain in the arse to get the whole thing together. And do editing and generate ad sales and whatnot. But maybe someone is up to the challenge.

Rangefinder magazine is put out by WPPI - the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International association. Kind of makes sense that they'd have a heavy emphasis on that.

It is a free trade magazine. If that's what interests you, great. Otherwise, it's like 'Oil Change Monthly' magazine, compared to HotRod. Industry trade rags are made for those in that industry.

Not me! ;) But I do like the idea.

I'm a big home recording enthusiast, and there is a brilliant magazine for recording engineers, TapeOp, that I would model my perfect photo magazine on. Interviews, letters, talks with gear manufacturers, gear reviews (with a focus on actually using the things) of both new and vintage stuff. And a real egalitarian, hobbyist-to-pro point of view. I actually write for it from time to time.

I just subscribed to Lightleaks, too...the "lo-fi" photography mag. We'll see how that is...
