50 Summilux is da DEVIL!
I have a Leica IIf that needs a rangefinder mechanism adjustment. Does anyone have some pointers or should I send it to a service person for this?

the simple vertical and horizontal adjustments are fairly easy on a barnack type rf.
the horizontal adj. is from behind the screw near the front vf window and the vertical adj. is the rotation of the round wedge prism which is actually the rf window after the trim ring is unscrewed.
this is the rf window closest to the shutter speed dial.

I correctly set the horizontal adjustment on my IIIc -- target, the moon -- but, although I rotated the prism this way and that, the vertical stubbornly stayed a little off.

If the wedge can't get perfect vertical alignment, it means you have to shim (very slightly) the half-silvered mirror. I had to do that when replacing that mirror in my IIIa, perhaps the one I got was a little out of parallel?

Thanks for the advice guys. As it turns out, I have a problem with the shutter cropping up now. So it looks like I have to send it in. Will be sending it to Tony Rose who has someone that works on cameras close by. A shame. This is my favorite walk around camera when I don't want to carry a bag. Also, the collapsible Summicron got some new life with the addition of Yellow 023 B+W filter. I feel like I have to send off my best friend on the whole wide world.
