Canon LTM Rangefinder out of alignment

New to Rangefinders. I keep reading about adjusting the vertical and horizontal alignment of rangefinders. How do you know if you rangefinder is out of alignment? Dumb Question?

Focus on a star at night. See if the RF image and the viewfinder completely
match when the lens is set at infinity.
