Forest, There have been many good suggestions, but I think Phil really nailed it. If $80 is the budget..... then the answer has to be "what's the best SLR you have for $80 tax and shipping all in?" Because in the end, you could decide on models or features or based on recommendations....& never find one. Like Huss said, places like Roberts will work to your advantage. Even if you phone and talk to a human at KEH.....the sales people are not in the same place as the cameras, and you won't get an in-hand description

Yes, I've heard better things about Robert's Camera than KEH. I took a look at used photopro and saw many olympus, minolta, manual, autofocus, etc. etc. all with 6 months warranty.
I think we have a winner. If she doesn't want my hand-me-downs I will have her phone up Robert's. Better to talk to a person too than search listings on eBay.

Out of interest, is your friend aware of the cost of buying, developing and scanning film?
Because if all that is being done commercially, it’s going to cost a lot more than the $80 camera before to long...

Yes she got her film developed, although I scanned it for her. It took her about 3 weeks to finish one roll, so I don't think she is going to go through a whole lot of film, just something cool for her to use to snap once in awhile.
