This was a modification that Shintaro did to some Rapidwinders. It did change the "feel" slightly, but it also could cause the winder to skip occasionally.
I changed the sprocket drive in mid 90's to an alloy one and that gives the same effect. The spring on Shintaro's madification is softer, similar to the one I use in the M2 Rapidwinder. On the M6 winder I find it a bit too tentative. I like the lever to "snap" back, rather than slide back.
