I have never seen one of these and wonder why it was designed this way. Perhaps to be used a body minus a shutter? I'm not seeing a rear view but it says its a screw mount.

Found this article with pictures. Crazy set-up (Compur-Summitar):

It appears that this shutter-button adapter allows you to use either the internal body shutter, or use the lever to use the lens compur shutter which I believe allows flash-sync at either 1/100 or 1/200? I like the looks of the lens and the beveled/scalloped aperture-ring. A nice aesthetic.

Older thread with some background info:

My father has one of the in-lens shutter Summicrons; it was given to him by a Leitz qa/qc staff member he worked with in the early 1970s.

Why? Flash sync. Fill flash at 1/50 is not very practical.

Maybe the camera shutter is supposed to be on Bulb when this lens is used. If so, then the device would trip the camera shutter first, then trip the Compur shutter while the camera shutter is still open. Just a guess.

The rarity of this Summicron makes it interesting to me. I don't use flash anymore.

Yes, you either use the mechanical adapter/link, one version of which opens the camera shutter first, or you set the camera to B and open the camera shutter first then fire the lens shutter. It's pretty awkward.
