Ratings in Gallery? Yes or No ?

While I like comments in the gallery, and votes in contests,
I am not such a big fan of enabling "Ratings" in the gallery as I don't see any good purpose to it.

Is it any surprise we have different tastes and different ideas of what makes a good pic?

This issue recently came to focus when a member who did not bother to read and understand the contest rules and mistook the ratings as their "vote" on each of the pics. He generously rated over a 150 contest entries a 1 because we are so entitled to his opinion.

hmm. what to do ?

Yes or No, are RATINGS in the Gallery really useful?
Personally, I don't see RATINGS as useful as all.

If removed, you would still be able to leave comments.

Stephen

Thank you, Stephen, I think this is a good thing to do...if it is decided to lose the ratings, then I am quite happy.🙂

Ratings are dumb to begin with, especially with anonymity.
This is a gallery, not a critique.

I would also love to see a "Turn Featured Off" function in the settings, having to turn it off every time I go into the gallery is annoying sometimes.

Something Is Wrong Here ? ?

Something Is Wrong Here ? ?

Maybe I voted wrong?
I voted "NO", and most comments here are against the ratings, as I am.
But 70% of the votes are "YES, the ratings are useful".

What does a "No" vote mean?

I would go for ratings only if they could only be bestowed in an attributed comment.

It's one thing when a photo doesn't receive a comment: when I have a photo go by with just a few views and no comments, my internal rating is "0". But uncommented, unattributed number ratings are just obtuse. A high rating without some sort of comment means nothing, and a low rating without comment is just someone being obnoxious.

Skip the ratings. Keep the comments and the TAGS/FAVORITES/LIKE buttons.

The new gallery is beautiful and seems to have attracted more posters -- a good thing. While I'm still getting used to the navigation, the new implementation seems better than the old in nearly every way. The only negative seems to be the sudden appearance of anonymous trolls.

Congrats to Stephen and Jorge for the quality and user-friendliness of the new gallery.

The poll question is: "Should the Ratings System be removed from the Gallery?" My answer is yes. I am in favor of removing the ratings since the comments are far more useful. - jim

The whole issue, it seems, is the people's extra sensitiveness to their own work: A very bad approach to life in general.
We know very well that it's all subjective and yet, we can't accept it if it's directed at us? This is a form of self-hypocrisy, too.

I got a 1 on a pic. And I slept like a Baby. It's all part of the fun.

I think the only good service they provide is a quick approval method for someone who doesn't want to take the time or hasn't any comments, but the "Like" button would serve that purpose well. Ditch the rating and add the "Like" button is my vote.

I don't see much use for them either, so I voted to remove them; however, if ratings do stay, have the system REQUIRE raters to add a comment in addition to their rating.

That's the way they have always worked. You can rate only if you post a comment. I voted for them to stay. I more or less always use rating if I comment.
