RAW exposure compensation

I find that I usually have to increase exposure in the RAW converter by +1 to 1.5. Is this typical for the R-D1?

It depends on what kind of picture you are shooting. If you have lots of sky in your picture, maybe your meter is underexposing.
 
No, that's not my experience. I may be off by 1/3rd of a stop, even 2/3rd of a stop but that mostly has to do with my own preferences and the decisions I take when shooting.

Are you sure your monitor is calibrated OK?

Did you check the metering results of your R-D1 against a handheld meter's results?
