RD-1: Non original Batteries Warning

Sounds to me like some design engineers need to have their salary cut.

OK, that's harsh. They need to be confined in a room designing their own clothing and ordered to wear it for a year.

If it was an engineering issue, you'd have perfect products all the time. There's nothing an engineer would rather do than design something that's really good and dependable.

Unfortunately, design and production budgets are constrained because of economical considerations. In other words, the (wo)man in the street doesn't want to pay for well designed stuff, they just want everything to be cheap..

Designing something properly takes time and money. Being picky in quality control means more rejects, and that is money too.. this concept doesn't go well with cheap..

Conclusion: if you want good stuff, buy good stuff..

This recall notice put out by Nikon yesterday shows that even the Camera Makers approved batteries can give problems sometimes:
"Nikon Recalls Some EN-EL3 dSLR Batteries.
Nikon Inc. is asking your cooperation in connection with a voluntary recall of certain lot numbers of its Nikon Model EN-EL3 rechargeable lithium ion battery packs. The battery pack can experience a short circuit causing it to overheat and possibly melt, posing a potential hazard to consumers. There have only been four confirmed reports of incidents of the problem worldwide, and while no injuries have taken place, Nikon Inc. has initiated this recall of the affected lot numbers as a reflection of its commitment to safety and product quality. We are asking that owners of the affected battery packs return them to Nikon Inc. for a free replacement".
