Still need to give Aperture 2.0 a real workout to see how it performs with large catalogs of images, but it's nice to be able to choose between Aperture and Adobe Lightroom rather than have it be Lightroom or nuttin', as it was with the previous version of Aperture (which would only import DNG files if they had been shot with a supported camera in the first place; the R-D 1 was not a supported camera, so Aperture 1.5 wouldn't work with its files even if converted to DNG. Yes, I know about the .plist hack; tried it; didn't like the results.)

I've gotten fairly facile with Lightroom, but am getting disenchanted with the way it slows down once you start managing large numbers of files with it (by "large" I mean in the range of 10,000-plus, which isn't at all unrealistic for a serious shooter.) Yes, I know there are workarounds, such as splitting your photo collection into multiple catalogs, but I'd rather work ON my photos rather than have to work "around" software.

Anyway, as I said, it's nice to be able at least to try another option and see which one I like better. Aperture 2.0 (Mac only, by the way) has a 30-day trial download, so I've got a month to sort it out...

On Apple's website, it says the following. It seemed to work, at least on the trial version.

Aperture works with most DNG files generated from cameras that support this format and DNG files generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.​

Doing a little testing and found importing my Aperture 1.5 library into Aperture 2 reveals the OLD problem of RD-1 files which have been converted to DNG, NOT displaying and showing the "unsupported image format"

The same file freshly imported into AP2 works just fine.

I guess this means losing some previous adjustments. Fortunately, I still have 1.5 should I need to go back.

Just thought this was interesting.

I just made some comparisons using CO4 (ERF) and AP2 (DNG) and I find it a lot harder to get nice colors in AP2. Setting the same white balance in both programs makes the AP2 a lot warmer, and the AP2 file is underexposed compared to the CO4 version. I guess this is because AP2 lacks a color profile for the R-D1. It makes a lot more work necessary to achieve similar results, though. Perhaps someone has tips & tricks for getting good colors in AP2? I'd really like to return to Aperture (used it for my D200), if possible. Especially with the new tools in version 2 like devignetting and local contrast enhancement.

Thanks, that worked. I thought I was going crazy. I just re-import the pics as you suggested. Then lift and stamp the adjustments to each picture. Long process but a lot faster than having to modify each. Afterwords, just sort by import date and delete out the older Raws. 🙂

Now I can shoot raw again if I needed. Prior to this, I rarely shoot raw. But will still keep the raw pics to a minimum and will use it only on critical or travel stuff.

Here's a link of some random pics taken with the R-D1. I can't remember but I think most were taken in JPG mode.

After I reimport 99% of my photos, then copying and pasting the metadata/adjustments from each photo to the newly imported one, I discovered something that would have saved a ton of time. Instead of having to reimport all of them. You only have to import one. All the metadata/adjustments/ratings are still in the original DNGs from Aperture 1.5. In Aperture 2, it just doesn't recognize it because it needs to be decoded in the Raw2.1 format. If it doesn't display correctly, you don't have the option to change the decoding method.

If you copy the adjustments from a newly imported DNG file, even without any adjustments. Then pasted it into the other older DNG files that are already in Aperture, it will work. Even if you pasted into 50+ DNG files that already exist, they will now display correctly (instead of the unsupported format error). All the older metadata/adjustments/ratings will stay just like the original. You can probably search all photos with the keyword DNG, and paste the new adjustment into all of them. I know it works for all DNGs in one projects.

This would have saved me weeks of reimporting then copying and pasting each individual photo adjustment/metadata/rating. :bang:

Forgot to mention that the colors are more neutral and less pink when it is decoded into AP2 (at least on mine since I did the plist hack from the D70). It also looks more underexposued compared to AP1.5.
