I have an RD-1 with original firmware, and in my ignorance - and a few preliminary tests, thought that the FAT16 file system of the RD-1 would handle 2 gig cards.

Anyway, during a shoot on Friday ( shooting in RAW ) I filled some Ultra II 1 GB cards, which subsequently downloaded no problem.
I also used two *new* Extreme III 2GB cards - these appeared to format Ok, and filled up with 200 images per card … no apparent problems … all 200 images seem normal on the camera - they're still there ;-)

However … back at base, I only seem to be able to get half of the 2GB downloaded. I have tried on Mac OSX and Windows XP … I've even tried Sandisk Rescue Pro … but I'm still 200 images short! (100 per card)
The best I've been able to achieve is getting the 'lost' 200 .ERF downloaded but PhotoRAW doesn't like them.

I'm feeling fairly queasy at the moment at the thought that I've lost half of the content of two cards …

I would be very grateful for any help with this one. Very grateful.

Thanks

Just 2 tips FWIW.
Try another card reader.
Check the signatures of your restored .ERF files. You should read:
Type: TEXT
Creator: dosa

I also had problems with 2 GB cards (SanDisk and Kingston). I also have a 1 GB SanDisk card. The crazy thing is that the 2 GB Kingston card was no problem on my nearly 4 years old PC but my HP nx8220 Notebook (age about 1.5 years) refused to read all 2 GB cards where the PC wasn't able to read the 1 GB card and the SanDisk 2 GB cards. So I ended up copying most stuff to hard disk and back to another card which one of the machines was able to read.

The final solution for me was to go to the HP support site and there I found an update for the built-in card reader on the Notebook and now problems with with any of the cards are gone.

So the previous tip to use another card reader (or a software update) is also what I would recommend. What I also do at first with every new card is to get it formatted by the camera (an R-D1 with firmware update, so effectively an R-D1s).

All I can offer is that you send my the cards and I'll give it a try.

did you buy the extreme III's locally, or online? if not at a local shop, then you may want to go to sandisk's page and enter the srial number on their wbpage to make sure its valid.

I had the same problem with my R-D1s and after I changed to a new card reader....no problems....I'm using a Lexar reader and it works fine.....don

My only advice is to beg, borrow or buy a Sandisk card reader.

I have had similar issues with Sandisk cards, which is why I no longer use them. I've found that they will read fine in Sandisk card readers (if you want to spend the same amount again on a reader) but will not work in oem or PC integrated readers. At least that was the case with the last 2GB sandisk card I bought and I swore I'd never buy another one.

On the other hand my 2GB Kingston Ultimate and my oem 2GB cards (which cost me GBP 10 each) work fine. I personally think the 'speed' thing is a complete hype unless you are using a Nikon D2H where it may give you an edge.

Good luck, I sympathise but it is worth remembering that in memory terms the R-D1 is an old camera and the latest card technologies may not work with it (and definitely not SD-HC).

Thanks very much for everybody's advice so far. I tried to log a support message on the Epson site but it rejected my RD-1 serial number :-S (bought brand new from Robert Whites)

I will try another card reader, I've used a Belkin, Imation, and 6 in 1 PC card adapter … on both a Mac and a PC … but I guess another one couldn't hurt ! the readers are a few years old.

I find it weird that the RD-1 lets me scroll through the images, even zoom them etc … but seems like anything written past the first gig is not recognized by my readers/computers …

I'll let you know how it resolves itself.

Thanks again.

Thanks again for the responses. I got myself another reader (Sandisk 12-in-1) … and ALL of the images downloaded OK :)

I am so very happy to have the 200 missing pictures. VERY HAPPY!!

So, you can use an RD-1 (no S) with Extreme III 2 GB cards and live to tell the tale. My next job is to upgrade to 'S' …

PS, still waiting for Espon to call back ;-)
