For the lack of a better place to post this, I at least will try to raise awareness for stolen property:

I had a R-D1 (serial 002035) with a Leitz Summicron 35/2.0 (serial 3639406) stolen last Saturday 3.1.2009 near Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain.

Should by any chance someone be offered this kit or find it anywhere announced, would you please let me know?

Thanks for your help - and in case of success the finder will be rewarded!!

I would start on Ebay. The thief would most likely sell them there I guess.

I hope that eventually you'll find something in the right direction...

it may be possible/useful to notify the manufacturers if the items are under guarantee or may require manufacturer-level service in future? it was useful to send the serial number of a stolen rolex to the factory.

good luck

dear spanish friends,

thanks for your help. will check serials asap tonight when home from work! Great community spirit!

is anyone here who lives on Tenerife?
My best bet would be second hand photo shops in Santa Cruz. They have taken money from my bank account at Santa Cruz yesterday, so I assume that they are after quick cash.

I have been maintaining the serial number registry for the R-D1. Please send me serial numbers and I'll keep my eyes open.

Olaf, so sorry to hear of the theft! Best of luck with this. It could help prevent others from suffering the same (and satisfy curiosity) if you will describe how this happened. They got your credit card too, enabling them to draw cash?

I was on Lanzarote in the Canary Is. in April with my M8 and Summicron 28... I can imagine their being stolen... it would have been a nightmare. I hope your trip was otherwise pleasant and you brought back some pictures at least?

Doug,

big stupid me left luggage in the trunk of my car while at beach. Though merely 100m away I did not notice anything due to the surf. Rear window broken, backrest of rear seat open ... and gone they were. Most likely the f...ers watch us arrive. The holiday was great, but all pictures gone with the camera.

Cheers

Olaf

From The Online Photographer:

RegisterYourCamera.com: "Ever wonder if that second hand camera you purchased online was stolen? Well, now there is a way to find out before you buy. RegisterYourCamera.com is a free online service for registering your photographic equipment. If someone steals your camera, simply enter the serial number and a description into the online database and your done. When someone searches on stolen serial numbers, your item will then be listed. Sounds simple enough, yet it could be very effective in helping track your missing item.

Sorry to hear about your camera. I hope you find it soon.

I grew up in Santa Cruz de Tfe. many, many years ago and it was the best place in the whole world. Very little crime and virtually none of it violent. I moved to the States in late 1979 and haven't been back to Tenerife since the mid 80s but I hear from friends that things have changed quite a lot.
