RD1 an Jupiter 3 lens

Hallo everybody! As an RD1-newbee I have a question to the experienced RD1-users. Would a Jupiter 3-lens (LTM with adapter) work well with the RD1?

The J3 50/1.5 will work well with the R-D1.

I personally have little use for the lens but I've had no problem sticking it onto my R-D1.

If you have or can get a good copy that works with no focusing errors than you should be in business. It is a great lens if it is working properly.

Anyone have any idea how it compares to the Jupiter-8 F2 or the ancient Summiron (non collapsible) F2 Leicas ? .. none of them are coated from what I can tell - the J8 is soooooo cheap (I won one on E-Bay for £1.25 !!)

Not sure about all those lenses, but I have used the J-8 and it's pretty nice on the rd-1 I've also used the I-22 collapsable and I-50 rigid as well as a summar collapsable from 1936 .. all have unique looks, I was basically messing around until I got my Zm 50/2 Planar. If I had to use one of those (besides the planar) as a "normal" lens (not dreamy etc) I'd say the j8 would be best.

Although my J3 looked almost mint, it was off 30cm at 2m and 1m at 5m and the focus ring was really rough and stiff. I got cramps in my hand while doing a test roll! I sent it to Brian Sweeney and he made it all better. The focusing was typical of J3's according to Brian. The rough movement of the focus ring was due to an early repair gone wrong, which would explain why the lens looked almost unused. Brian had a really hard time getting the lens back together because of this. Now that it works great, its my favourite lens. I also love my 75 Heliar too but the J3 wins because its so compact. I highly recommend a J3 that is sorted out by Brian Sweeney.

It took a lot of time to get my great J3. First it took a long time it to get to me from Russia (mostly due to the slowness the Russian postal service and the stupidity of Canadian postal service), then testing it, sending it too Brian, etc. Brian was good though, turn around time was approximately 2 weeks I believe. The whole process took about 3 months. The wait was worth it for me but if you're the impatient type, perhaps you could consider something like the Canon 50/1,8.

I don't know about the Leitz/Leica lens you're talking about, which could well be uncoated but the J-8 is coated. I don't recall there were any uncoated J-8s ever made.

I love my Planar too and, yes, if I have to choose one other 50 for my R-D1 it would be the J-8 without a doubt.

The I-22 looks cool on the R-D1. Makes it look even more "retro". 🙂 Don't forget to extent, twist and lock the lens before shooting with it....

Thanks Folks - It looks like what was "Worth a laugh for £1.25" (the J8) is going to turn out to be a serious lens in my rig !! . I really want a J9 85mm and have seen slightly milky Leica Elmar 90s for around the same cash (around £50-£60) too so that`s the next step.. it would seem that J9s are going up and up in value, I`ll be very lucky to get one of those for uner a Fiver.. I guess because the J8 was the Kit lens for the Zorki 4K. there are just far more of them about..

I just got a j-9 recently for about 60euros, it focuses well at close distances on my bessa-r. So far I really like the look of it. Too bad it doesnt focus well at longer distances, may be it will work better on a zorki.

the ruskov flange is minimally different from the regular leica flange. I don't have the RD1 nor the J3, but my guess is that such a fast lens would have a very narrow DOF especially at close focus range. I had a J11 to fit my leitz IIIa and the flange WAS different so I end up with a first roll with lots of wrong focus image. I shim the focus cam. planning on doing the same on a J9 and J12 very slowly with comparaison of distance focus with a regular leitz cron. There seems to be not so much info about that flange difference though

First, many thanks for your advices. But I am not sure, because there is a littlle difference between the screwmount-leicas (28,8mm) and the M-Leicas (27,8mm) distance from flange to film. Would the adapter solve this problem?

I read somewhere (I'll try to find the reference) that the Russian lenses, especially the 50mm, have a slightly longer focal length than the Leica etc. which results in the cam movement being a bit to short for the correct close focus... I'm right now scratching my head to see if this makes sense or not... but anyway, on my J-8 I ended up sticking a thin shim of paper onto the back of the focus ring that rolls on the cam, and that made the focus acceptable (correct at 1-2 meters, slightly front focused at infinity, but within the DOF for all practical purposes). I'm using a CV LTM adapter.

I`m wondering if these are adjustable?. is that focus ring threaded so it can be calibrated?.. I also wonder how you can stick a piece of paper on the J8`s circular lens end which runs on the cam, can`t have been easy.
