sad as it may seem, i have already begun to think about winter shooting.
winter here in the frozen north can mean temps that dip to between -30c to -40c and lots of sunshine to blizzard conditions.
a nice day is sunny and -20c.
anyone shoot the rd1 in similar conditions and how does the camera react or behave?
getting curious as to what to expect.

... likes film again.
When I had mine, it was winter here in Hokkaido, which means ~ 2.7m of snow in the city and up to 7m in the mountain-region around. I took mine out during some heavy snow-storms at night (the best light, BTW !!
) and absolutely no problems at all.

Used mine in the freeze last year in Seattle. Temps not getting below 20F or much above. Walked about 5 miles. The camera worked fine and I took about 1G of frames that day. Battery was not challenged in any way. Of course 20F is a lot warmer (?) than what you will get i imagine.

I've only shot mine in just below freezing temperatures in the Belgian Ardennes, without any trouble et al
Battery life normally suffers from cold weather, I've not tried it but if you have batteries with less then 1500mAh I'm sure they'll go dead more rapidly.

Used mine in ice storm - no problems, just had to shield it from getting too wet:

it's 15c right now...
i'm thinking ahead to the colder days and wondering if i should start looking for a half case for the rd1, it could help my hands and maybe the camera electronics also.

It will work and make sure bring along a couple of spare batteries. The batteries does not work effectively in cold.

This thread depresses me because I know how close winter is to us..
I think it should be ok, you'll just have very short battery life.

Done a few winters in Calgary...minus 25 Celsius at noon. I was using an FM then, and the spare battery in your pocket dies first.
I learned to use meter-less camera out of necessity...but the RD1 won't work without batteries.
However, you could do "street photography" inside West Edmonton Mall.

All this fell very odd to me. There is a heatwave here in Provence for weeks. more than 30° c night and day...and still shooting !

And I thought Boston was cold!
I did buy a half-case for my R-D1, just to give a little more protection in general. It does seem to bulk it up a bit.

Same in north west of france.
About cold, I' m pleased to see that the R-D1 works fine in low temperatures, I got mine for only a few months.
Usualy, in cold conditions, I carry the spare batteries in a pocket.

joe, is your strap long enough to go across the added bulk of the parka?

Dunno if I should envy or feel sorry for you guys... 36º celsius is the average temp here... looking forward to the winter months, so that it may drop to 30º... it's sweltering here! Humidity is the worst. Been sleeping shirtless the past 6 months now... fungus is the number one enemy of my RD-1 and lenses.
