RD1, Magenta Cast and all things Leica!

Hi Jeff

Hi Jeff

My experiments, and reports from many others indicate that there is the magenta effect, but not as pronounced as on the Leica. My experiments also show that the amount of the effect is effected by lighting situation and WB settings.

The sensor used in the RD1 is similar to the one in my *ist, and several Nikons, etc., so it is likely the hot filter and firmware combination which causes this effect and like many others, it doesn't bother me, and there are even some IR wedding photographers who use no hot filters and touch up the synthetic clothing in post processing.

I think we have a potentially optimal setup here, less problems with Magenta than the M8, but also less IR blocking and possibly better b&w than other cameras that use this sensor with increased IR blockage.

I do believe that if you adjusted your first photo with different WB settings and/or flash settings, you can find a way to reduce that magenta of the travel case.

In my case Photoraw shows "as shot color" temp as 5100K. The image came directly from the camera there was no manipulation. It would be interesting to see if, as I suspect, the effect is consistent across the white balance range. AMPGUY did some quick shots which would seem to support my hypothesis.
