So, that's what they're doing with all those bodies they haven't been able to sell. Hmm . . .

Yup, this is a firmware-update. Maybe we gona see the "s" handpainted on the remaining bodys.

The NW will rise again.
Not really much of an announcement. I guess we are going to have to wait to hear from someone who gets one to see what the real differences are.

They were probably just trying to find a good excuse to cut the price and move sales ... Yodobashi posted the price today - only 249800 Yen, roughly 2128 USD - not too bad when you can get a Nikon D50 for less than 500 US.

It would be very interesting to know whether they have been able to address any of the quality control problems with this new 'version'.

Playback magnification 16x. Do you think that is with RAW? Otherwise, not a big deal. The Adobe RGB color space is a welcome improvement though.
Still too expensive for a second body for me though; though I would like one.

OK, let's hear the cheapest prices! Japan? Hong Kong? USA? I want the cheapest R-D1s available!

Very confused
I suppose it's still 6MP and 1.5x ??

The update on Imaging Resource seems to imply so; they write:
"The playback zoom function now works for Raw files (not just JPEG images as was the case in the R-D1), and has been extended from the original 9.4x maximum zoom to a new high of 16x."
This would be very useful, especially to us raw-format shooters. (Contrary to what the Imaging Resource quote implies, playback zoom does work on raw files; it's just more limited than what's available for JPEG. The limited version on the R-D 1 isn't really enough, for example, to check the sharpness of the eyes in a full-length portrait. 16x zoom for raw images would be much more useful. I really hope this capabililty can be added to the original R-D 1 through a firmware update!
The Adobe RGB color space is a welcome improvement though.
Not so significant for me now that I shoot raw format almost all the time. Will be helpful for those who want to take advantage of the new raw+JPEG capability, though. (I still wonder how useful raw+JPEG will be, given that two raw shots are enough to stop up the R-D 1's buffer; with high-quality JPEG added, you might be limited to one shot at a time between buffer flushes!)[/QUOTE]

So do I.
Good news would be a larger buffer size but i doubt there is the least hardware modification in the R-D1s.
BTW the French brochure refers to a one year warranty instead of 2 years for the R-D1.
Best,

I'm curious if the lower noise at high ISO benefit applies to RAW files as well?

That's right, 16x in both JPEG and RAW mode.
In the press release circulated in Japan, they also mentioned that now the hot pixels can be automatically mapped out, and improved WB under incandescent lighting.

That was my first thought as I read through the press release. Digital is just NOT my
area, so I'm asking--are the changes specified all do-able with firmware updates?
Oh, and the 'S' is no problem--all that stuff is silk-screened anyway!

About the mapping, where did you read that? I didn't find that on the spec sheet on the Japanese Epson site.

You can find it in the specs on the French brochure:
http://www.epson.be/fileadmin/prospects/R-D1s__Brochure_FR.pdf (750 KB pdf file)
"Correction des pixels morts" i.e. correction of dead pixels.
Best,
