What is it?

I don't know about RFF#2 since I haven't the foggiest clue what RFF#1 is or was. Could someone enlighten me and the others who were afraid to ask for fear of appearing stupid? I have no such fears, obviously.
 
Well, we, the fine and talented membership of RFF have collaborated in the publishing of two books. Both are currently available through Lulu.com, but Lulu's printing is inconsistent. So, this is an attempt to get the second book printed by a different source.

nearly 80% of the total RFF membership has joined since this project was completed and offered to the public.. here's the story behind the Rangefinder Book history

the original RFF book was published nearly 3 years ago, and featured the artistry of 25 of the original RFF members. The 112 page book showcases selected images from what was once a very small and tight-knit group that happened to be spread across the globe, yet shared a love of the 'rangefinder look'.

A year later, the same group of people decided that a sequel was in order, and wanted to include more people, as there were countless new RFF members with obvious photographic talent. Of course, there was no way to include everyone in a printed piece, so the list was limited to the first 100 respondents to a public offering. The result of that offering became the RFF Book 2: A Gathering

While the content of both books is clearly a winner, the online publisher we chose puts profits over customer satisfaction. The quality control is very hit and miss. Some people report great reproductions while others report very visible color casts, usually in the black and white images, that comprise the vast majority of images in the both books.

Unfortunately, that quality issue has limited our books sales to perhaps one tenth of what they would be if the quality were monitored properly.

What this thread is about, is having the second, 222 page book reprinted by a professional local printer who would print it at the best possible quality in the same manner.

As this would be a limited edition print, and given the current RFF membership of over 13,000 we should have no problem selling thousands of these. But understandably, people want to know what they're getting for their money. And I see that Lulu has taken down the book preview PDF for unknown reasons. Perhaps we can put up a preview here (altho I can't seem to get it down under 3MB.
 
Thank you Brett! In the meantime, could we suggest that the second book is similar to the first, which still has a preview option at the Lulu site?

Well, I wasn't sure if they printed off X number of copies and keep them in stock or reprint upon demand. I was hoping they still had good stock from when it was considered good quality.
 
So I guess the print quality of the first book is similar. I wouldn't mind a reprint of the first book in addition to a reprint of the second one.

Lulu doesn't keep stock. They are an on-demand printer. So, you order one; they print one.

The first book was pretty decently printed. The second book much less so.

In the meantime, Lulu also started working with a printer in Spain to service Europe as the shipping costs from the USA were prohibitive. However, this Spanish printer sucks eggs. While the US printer made at least an effort to get things properly calibrated (at least, it seemed so from the print quality of book 1), the Spanish printer does not. IIRC everyone who got their copy from this printer complained about the poor quality.
 
I'm still wondering how much things will cost. What would be a ball park price for the book, and how much would shipping to outside USA cost?

As this is a "local" printer I don't believe they will be shipping the book themselves. We are I think hoping for the good graces of a volunteer, Brett or someone else to ship the books. You can assume that shipping will be the cost of packing material plus the postage which can be estimated at USPS.com. Brett will be checking with the printer and I am sure he will be posting what he learns as soon as he can.

My thanks goes out in advance to the (as yet unknown) volunteer! Having to pack and send at least 100 copies isn't the kind of job I have in mind for my free weekend. :)
