I tried a Blurb book for an engagement album for my clients. I was NOT impressed with the quality at all.

I will say the printing was better than my RFF Book #2 (which was pathetic, so that is not saying much), but it is not even close to, say, a Sharedink book in quality.

If I remember correctly, I was either the first or one of the first to receive the RFF #2 book and was the original posted on the quality issues. My copy is purple. That is not a mis-print. The B&W's are "Purple & White".

I would be very happy to get another copy by a quality printer.

I think the problem with a lot of these book sites is they don't really incorporate decent colour management in the workflow - presumably to simplify things for the consumer. I looked yesterday at mypublisher and they say that you should make sure all images (including monochrome) are in 'sRGB or RGB' colour space - this is pretty meaningless. They can't even handle grayscale files. This just goes to show that you probably have no idea what the images are going look like in the final product and with black and white this makes things even worse.

If you are going to do this venture surely it is worth finding a publisher that can deal with these colour management issues.

I hear you.
Shared Ink (or for that matter) any of the other top quality album producers (even Asuka etc.) would probably offer a better option but at 222 pages it's going to be expensive.

I am willing to try out a small book first - this could take me a while but if I have time this week I can hopefully slap together some shots from the montreal trip and put it to print - only a 12-20 pager - as a test book with "My Publisher".

I'm willing to look at Blurb as well but that's 2 strikes against them here and especially based on your recommendation since you know the type of quality we're looking for (i.e. printing coffee table books). I'm going to also get in touch with another photographer I know to see where had his book published as well.

Yeah, Brett's talking a local printer with a printing press, right? I assume that would be a 4-color press, since there are color images in the book.

Having worked in printing in a past life I can say most certainly that the set-up and make-ready for 4-color offset is not justified for a run of 100.

This is most likely a demand shop using commercial quality color laser printers, but paying more attention to detail than Lulu.

We have one very nice color laser here at work, and we occasionally will do short runs of things like brochures on it, and the quality does rival that of 4-color offset. In fact, I think the photos are cleaner, since the laser uses (appears to use) the variable pitch dots, and offset shops (often still) use the fixed pitch halftone screens.

I really fail to see how it's difficult to get a more or less normal B&W print. This is not rocket science. I can do quite normal appearing B&W prints on the old HP 720 printer and various other ones. Certainly that shop has at least one "smart person" on staff who can adjust this.
