re: PP w/ Adobe PS LR "after" Vuescan -or- Silverfast SE Ai???

Hello,

I am new here, first post, so please bare with me and apologize if these questions have been asked in various past threads/posts.

I searched but still have questions, so again sorry for the repetition and Thank you all in advance for the time/effort and contributing to this amazing forum.

I have read through a few of these threads, including the most recent:
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113161

I am new to Neg. Scanning and the workflow involved, but have been reading up as much as I can on different offerings and scanners. I believe I am set on the Plustek 7600i Series but have some software related questions.

I currently have/use both Adobe PhotoShop CS5 & LightRoom3 for Post Processing.

From what I have read Silverfast Ai is for users that will use this for post processing without using the above Adobe type programs. . . . Am I wrong/correct ?

-or- Is Ai a better scanning software with more features

Will I miss anything from using the SE "Lite" version for the purpose of scanning/converting and then processing in LR3 or PS?

Is there a difference between the two versions SE & Ai Studio in the output from B&W Neg. Scans? I read 8 than 16?

Hi, first off a disclaimer...I work for Plustek.

You will end up with a better image if you do most of your adjustments in Silverfast simply because the software is working with the raw bits being produced by the sensor in the scanner. So you should always strive to get the best image you can out of Silverfast. In many cases, you will not need to do any additional editing to the image.

Ai gives you finer adjustment control than SE, so theoretically, you can get better/more accurate images by using Ai. However, because Ai is more complicated than SE, you probably can get better results sooner using SE simply because the learning curve is shorter.

As you learn more about the scanning process, you will recognize when you need to use a secondary editor and which editor will work best for the result you are trying to achieve. Sometimes I use the images right out of Silverfast, sometimes I use Photoshop and others I use Lightroom. I choose the program that will help me accomplish whatever it is I am trying to achieve or fix.

Hope this helps

I use a workflow very similar to what is suggested here --

http://benneh.net/blog/2010/09/25/vuescan-colorperfect-a-guide/

The idea is to use Vuescan (or Silverfast) to provide a linear raw scan (scan as a positive mode). After that, you use Colorperfect (not free, but has a trial), to do the inversion from negative to positive. Colorperfect is available as a plug-in to CS5, I believe.

A bit convoluted, but this saves me time and gives me better results than Silverfast/Negafix.
